Transforming Small and Medium Enterprises with Generative AI

Transforming Small and Medium Enterprises with Generative AI

In a recent webinar hosted by Techment Technology , titled "Generative AI Unleashed - Transforming Small and Medium Enterprises for Tomorrow," I discussed the potential of generative AI in the context of small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Here's a recap of the key insights shared during the session:

  1. What is Generative AI?

AI is an interdisciplinary field that leverages mathematics and data (statistics, cognitive science, and computing) to enable problem solving.

Generative AI is a subset of AI that involve creating or generating new data, images, text, or other content that is inspired by existing data. It operates on the principle of learning patterns from a dataset and then generating new instances that mimic those patterns. Generative AI techniques often leverage deep learning models such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), or autoregressive models like transformers.

The emergence of GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) represents a significant breakthrough in artificial intelligence. It's crucial to recognize that the "T" part, the Transformer model, is the real game-changer.

2. how does generative AI differ from other forms of AI?

Traditional AI methods might focus on tasks like classification or regression, where the goal is to make predictions or decisions based on existing data. Generative AI, on the other hand, is more about creativity and innovation. It's about pushing the boundaries of what AI can do by enabling machines to generate new and original content.

One of the fascinating aspects of generative AI is its ability to operate in an unsupervised learning setting. This means that the model learns from unlabeled data without explicit guidance, which opens a world of possibilities for exploration and discovery.

Generative AI has applications across various domains. For instance, it can be used in art generation to create new visual artworks, in content creation to generate text or music, or even in drug discovery to design new molecules with desired properties.

At its core, generative AI uses sophisticated algorithms, often based on deep learning models like Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) or Variational Autoencoders (VAEs), to generate new content that mimics the characteristics of the data it was trained on. It's like teaching a computer to be creative!

3.    How can generative AI serve as a catalyst for innovation within small and medium enterprises, fostering creativity and new product/service development?

For Small and medium enterprises, the primary challenge is to establish an end-to-end consumer marketing strategy that could effectively boost sales, streamline the customer purchasing journey, and optimize lead-generation at the lowest possible cost per lead. I have been serving as a Board director at KEENFOLKS , they leverage GenAI to create solutions and help customers gain much deeper insights into consumer behavior.  That allowed their customers to better understand market trends, consumer preferences, and inspire novel solutions and uncover untapped opportunities.

I had another client who was challenged with their data extraction from Avaya and frustrated with not being able to meet migration deadline.  Our consultant came up with a brilliant idea and used ChatGPT to create a data extraction SQL query.  That still requires knowledge around the data structure of Avaya database and the specific data you want to extract.  You need to adjust the SQL queries based on actual table structure, column names and data types in Avaya database and the new system.  Adequate access permissions to perform data extraction is critical as well.  Collaborating with AI reduced significant amount of work.

Overall, generative AI offers SMEs a powerful toolset to drive innovation, foster creativity, and develop competitive advantages in today's rapidly evolving business landscape. By embracing generative AI technologies and integrating them into their operations, SMEs can unlock new opportunities for growth, differentiation, and success.

4. What are the common challenges SMEs might face when implementing generative AI solutions?

  • AI literacy: Lack of understanding of what AI can do.  Lack of clarify on business objectives and success criteria, why do we need to implement AI?
  • Budget constraints and skillset sacristy: AI requires investment. SMEs often face challenges in allocating sufficient resources, skilled personnel, and technical expertise, for implementing generative AI solutions.
  • Data Availability and Quality: SMEs may struggle to access high-quality data in sufficient volumes for training generative AI models, leading to issues with data relevance, consistency, and privacy.
  • Risk management and change manage - Can’t ignore the psychological impact on employees.  Losing talents at SMEs could have significant impact on overall business.  Navigating ethical concerns related to bias, fairness and regulatory compliance could incur additional costs for AI adoption.

Addressing these challenges requires a strategic approach, collaboration across different functions within SMEs, and potentially seeking external expertise or partnerships to overcome resource constraints and technical complexities.

5. How can SMEs leverage generative AI to differentiate themselves in the market and create a unique selling proposition that resonates with customers?

To me, the differentiator is the unique value you provide to customers.  You can’t rely on AI to come up with your value proposition.  That requires you to speak to your customers.  However, AI can help you do research and come up with market analysis and competitive landscape analysis.  Combined with your deep customer insights, you can better define your competitive advantage.  There has been misconception about GenAI.  Prompting with questions won’t generate meaningful response unless people feed the model with relevant data.

6. How do you recommend SMEs measure the intangible benefits, such as enhanced creativity or improved customer experience, that generative AI might bring to their operations?

  • Talk to your customers and employees to conduct a baseline benchmark and understand your strength and gaps.
  • Customer service is where you can realize the benefit of automation leveraging AI. I serve as an advisor to Pypestream , a self-service platform powered by conversational AI.  They have helped customers deploy Generative-AI and automation within a few weeks.  Clients have seen savings of multi-million dollars with powerful and highly functional virtual assistant. Also to note is the application of Pypestream is not just in customer service, but employee and technician service and automation.
  • Once your customer service is automated, that will free up team’s time from repetitive tasks to value-driven activities and spark more innovation.
  • CSAT score is a good one to leverage when it comes to measuring customer satisfaction. For employees, I have created a skillset matrix that maps out what skillsets are required for them to enhance creativity and come up with a learning path for them.

During our discussions, two polls were conducted:

1.     Which parts of your business do you think would benefit the most if Generative AI was used?

  • Data analysis and insights
  • Product development
  • Process automation and optimization
  • Customer engagement and experience

2.     What challenges do you think might come up when you try to use Generative AI in your organization?

  • Data Security and Privacy
  • Cost of Implementation
  • Hiring the right talent
  • Unsure/No Concerns
