"Membership Economy is the term that I use to describe what I've been seeing in this transformation of how organizations engage with our customers. At the heart, it's about treating your customers like members and assuming, desiring that you're going to have a long-term relationship with them.”
This week on the Outthinkers podcast, Robbie Kellman Baxter talks about the rise of “Membership Economy” and the moves strategists and innovators can make to increase engagement, invest in customer relationships, and streamline revenue at the same time. Are you considering transitioning to a subscription model? Are you hesitant about changing how you charge? Robbie explains how to win in the “Membership Economy” by investing in members, fostering loyalty, and building recurring revenue.
Robbie Kellman Baxter is a consultant, author, and speaker. She has written The Forever Transaction and The Membership Economy, and hosts the podcast Subscription Stories. She has more than 20 years of experience providing strategic business advice to major organizations, including Netflix, Fitbit, Microsoft, and Consumer Reports, and has worked in or consulted to clients in more than 20 industries.
She has been focused on subscription and growth strategies for the past decade and coined the popular business term “Membership Economy”, which is now being used by organizations and journalists around the country and beyond. Robbie has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and on CNN.
- See strategy everywhere: Strategy is not reserved for executive meetings in corporate board rooms. Robbie explains how strategic thinking can be applied to everyday tasks—choosing a parking spot, navigating crowds at concerts, and shopping at the grocery store. To her, strategy is really about taking a step back and understanding your goals in order to make more informed decisions, wherever you are. Netflix saw strategy in valuing customer relationships higher than transaction counts, and established itself as a role model for subscription-based models. In your organization, take a step back. What is your overall purpose and what are the long-term goals you hope to achieve? What divisions of your organization could benefit from a strategy audit?
- Know where you stand: Membership models are not simply about taking your existing products and slapping a subscription-based price on them. Your products and services may be perfect for a subscription model, or they might not be. If you are looking to move towards subscription pricing, you must create a sense of prolonged value, belonging, and identity for your members. In your organization, what obstacles might come up in a shift to a subscription model? What is the number one blocker in the way of innovating on your pricing model?
- Find where you belong: In today’s “membership economy,” organizations who succeed are those who are able to create a sense of status and identity that stems from belonging to their community. Whether that feeling of belonging comes from a hobby, group, or product we love, humans have the same need to feel a part of something bigger. Our “memberships” define our sense of self and how the world perceives us—we might be members of Amazon Prime, Peloton, or a local yoga studio. In your organization, what products, services, or branding do you provide that people want to identify with? How might you create a culture of membership in your company?
- In her podcast series, Subscription Stories, Robbie interviews the leaders of the subscription revolution about how they’re using subscription pricing to build membership models so compelling their customers never want to leave.
