Types of CV/Resume Format and How to Use Them
Most times, Jobseekers are qualified for the job but it's either their CV is bad or their resume is not ATS optimized
I started a series on my YouTube channel last week on How to Write a CV/Resume based on different locations; UK, USA, and Canada. I've gotten positive feedback from people, even from those who are based in these countries, confirming all that I've said, and this got me more subscribers and clients in the past few weeks.
For those who are seeking jobs in Canada or planning to relocate to Canada through Work Visa, I'll advise you to prepare your Resume using the format I mentioned in the video below 👇

Now let's dive into the topic for today 🙂
Here are the three types of CV/Resume formats that we have generally;
1. The Chronological/Traditional Format:
A chronological resume or CV is a format that prioritizes relevant professional experience and achievements. This particular format is for candidates with rich, consistent professional experience, most especially those who are following a career path.
If you want to create this kind of resume, what comes next after your contact information and professional summary or career objective is your Professional/Work Experience.
A chronological resume helps employers quickly understand the value of your most recent and relevant work experiences. As employers may only spend a few seconds on each resume, prioritizing the most recent information helps ensures your experience gets seen.
2. The Functional Format:
The functional resume/CV format focuses on skills and abilities, not work experience. That’s why it’s also called a skills-based resume.
In this format, your work experience is listed with minimal detail at the bottom of the resume. A functional resume can be used by

3. Combination/Hybrid Format:
This format is for candidates with a diverse background of experience; people who have worked in different roles that are not related. In this format, the skills and abilities are more relevant than work experience.
When you are creating your CV using the combination format, you put your skills and competencies forward before work experience.
If you’re changing positions or industries, a combination resume might be a better fit. In this case, a resume that puts more emphasis on your transferable skills and abilities may be more beneficial to potential employers.
Recent graduates and those who have been out of work for a long time can also make use of the combination format
In conclusion;
When deciding which format to choose, consider both your background and the job you’re applying for. For example, you may have a rich, consistent professional background typically represented in a chronological format. However, the job you’re applying for might place heavier value on your proven skills and abilities, in which case you might choose a combination format to highlight what’s important to the employer. For clues on which the employer values most, pay attention to the requirements listed in the job description.
Note: The functional format is not advisable to use because it turns off the recruiters. Because of the minimal details on the CV or Resume, the recruiter is not impressed and this leads to not getting a positive feedback
