Greenhouse Capital, a leading venture capital firm known for catalyzing innovation across Africa, played a pivotal role in the Uganda E-Mobility Expo 2024. Collaborating with the Science, Technology & Innovation Secretariat, Office of the President and Kiira Motors Corporation , Greenhouse Capital brought together investors from across the globe to witness the groundbreaking innovations in Uganda’s e-mobility sector. The goal was to spotlight Uganda’s e-mobility potential and catalyze significant investment opportunities in the region
This landmark three-day event, which held from August 15th to 17th, was designed to attract investments into Uganda’s burgeoning e-mobility sector and to foster discussions on scalable and sustainable mobility solutions for Africa.
Key Highlights of the Engagement:
- Investor Engagement: Greenhouse Capital spearheaded efforts to convene investors from around the world, hosting them throughout the event to drive investment opportunities into Uganda’s e-mobility sector.
- Strategic Tours: Visits to key e-mobility companies like GOGO Electric and Zembo Electric Motorcycles showcased cutting-edge technologies and sustainable solutions tailored for Africa.
- Pitch Sessions: Emerging Ugandan e-mobility startups, including Karaa, eBee.africa , and Harakka, presented innovative solutions during a pitch session. The panel of investors provided feedback and discussed potential partnerships, highlighting the dynamic ecosystem developing in Uganda.
- Private Roundtable Session: The expo featured an Investor Welcome Dinner and a private roundtable session, where investors discussed investment opportunities within the Ugandan e-mobility sector and explored how to leverage current achievements for future expansion. This session underscored the strategic importance of targeted investments in sustainable mobility. .
- Tour of Kiira Plant: Tour of Kiira Motors manufacturing plant showcasing the technological advancements of e-mobility in the country.
- Panel Discussion: Greenhouse Capital’s Managing Partner, Mr. Bunmi Akinyemiju , moderated a panel titled “Capital, Policy, and Innovation to Catalyze Africa’s e-Mobility Revolution,” bringing together industry leaders to discuss the vital role of investment and innovation in Africa’s e-mobility progress.
Collaboration for Innovation: The event kicked off with tours to Gogo Electric, a pioneer in designing sustainable electric vehicles tailored for the African market, and Zembo Electric Motorcycles, known for its eco-friendly e-motorcycles and the establishment of battery-swap stations to support boda-boda (commercial motorcycle) riders in Uganda.
The day ended with a formal reception with the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, representatives from the Science, Technology, and Innovation Secretariat, and Kiira Motors.
Expo Highlights: Friday, the 16th was dedicated for the tour of the Kiira Motors facility, led by CEO Mr. Paul Isaac Musasizi , accompanied by Hon. Rebecca Alitwala @Kadaga, Uganda's First Deputy Prime Minister. This was followed by displays from various e-mobility companies, offering a detailed look at the latest technologies being developed. This visit offered investors an in-depth look at the manufacturing capabilities and innovative solutions Kiira Motors is bringing to Uganda’s e-mobility landscape.
Panel Discussions: The expo ended with a panel session moderated by Mr. Akinyemiju titled “Capital, Policy, and Innovation to Catalyze Africa’s e-Mobility Revolution.” The discussion emphasized the vital role of investment and innovation in the continent's e-mobility progress. The panel featured distinguished industry leaders and investors, including Mr. G. Sopitan , Founder of Metalex Commodities Inc. , Mr. Jakob Hornbach , CEO of Gogo Electric, Ms. Esther Ndeti , Investment Principal at Unicap, and Mr. Ivan Karau Kisembo from the Uganda Development Bank . Each panelist shared valuable insights on the challenges and opportunities for expanding sustainable mobility solutions across Africa.
Pitch Session: On the final day of the Uganda E-Mobility Expo 2024, Greenhouse Capital orchestrated a pitch session that brought together some of the most promising e-mobility startups in Uganda. Innovators like Karaa, eBee, and Harakka took the stage, presenting their groundbreaking solutions to a panel of investors. This session provided these startups with a rare opportunity to showcase their products, gain valuable feedback, and establish crucial connections that could lead to future collaborations and funding opportunities.
Following the pitch session, the event culminated in an exclusive investor roundtable discussion. This session allowed investors to delve deeper into the opportunities presented throughout the expo, engaging in strategic discussions about the future of e-mobility in Uganda and the broader African market. The roundtable provided a platform for investors to exchange insights, discuss challenges, and explore potential investment avenues, reinforcing the commitment to advancing sustainable mobility in the region.
