🚀 Unleash Your 'Why': The Ultimate Interview Skill for Aspiring PMs 🚀

Aspiring or junior Product Managers, listen up! We're about to unravel a game-changing skill that can supercharge your journey – the art of selling, not just products, but yourself, especially during interviews. We call it 'the Why,' and it's your secret weapon to nail that dream PM job. Let's dive in and transform your interview game.

💡 Setting the Interview Tone in Just 5 Minutes

Believe it or not, you hold the key to set the interview's tone within the first 5 minutes. Interviews usually kick off with introductions, where many candidates rush into showcasing their resumes and achievements. While that's crucial, don't overlook 'the why.' In these precious moments, your mission is to convince the interviewer of:

  1. Why you're passionate about the role.
  2. Why they'd be lucky to have you on their team.

🌟 Unleashing Your 'Why' for the Role

Put yourself in the interviewer's shoes – they're not merely interested in your paycheck dreams or personal accomplishments. They want to feel your hunger, your driving force that keeps you going in this role. So, dig deep. Why do you aspire to be a PM? What fuels your fire, especially on those challenging days?

For instance, I recently worked with someone who initially shared their 'why' by showcasing their PM skills from a previous role – a common approach. However, it didn't make them stand out. We dug deeper and discovered what was missing in their current role – the thrill of being part of a team that turns ideas into reality. They yearned to leverage their existing analytical and presentation skills while learning and growing a new skill set. We polished their 'why,' and it clicked like an 'aha' moment for both of us. Find your 'aha' moment and narrate it as effortlessly as telling a bedtime story.

🌐 Why They Want to Work with You

Interviewers crave both skillset and culture fit. So, divide your energy equally between these areas. Start by exploring the company culture, but never forget to be authentic. Whether it's an interview or a networking call, aim to leave them excited to work with you. Radiate positivity, showcase your teamwork spirit, and convey your strong work ethic. The message you want to convey is, 'We'll achieve a lot together, and we'll enjoy the journey.'

For instance, I've come across candidates with impressive experience, but they placed too much emphasis on their achievements, overshadowing their culture-fit potential. Remember, the little things matter – using 'I' instead of 'we' can signal a lack of teamwork, and criticizing a previous employer usually doesn't create a positive vibe.

🌈 In a Nutshell: Unearth Your 'Why'

'The why' is once again a critical skill for PMs, but in this context, it's not about business. It's about understanding your personal 'why' and communicating it clearly. Show your unwavering passion for the role, and let your authentic self shine. This approach isn't just your ticket to land a PM job; it's your path to building a fulfilling career. Embrace your 'why' and watch your PM journey skyrocket!" 🚀💪

Great read! Reminds me of Simon Sinek and how we should “start with why” in everything we do.
