Unmasking the Hidden Impacts of Imposter Syndrome

Unmasking the Hidden Impacts of Imposter Syndrome

Even the most accomplished leaders suffer from Imposter Syndrome, and few things are more insidious, because it quietly sows seeds of doubt and insecurity, making you question your worth despite your obvious successes.

This pervasive feeling of being a fraud doesn't just affect your professional life; it seeps into your personal relationships and self-perception, creating a constant, gnawing sense of inadequacy.

The most dangerous aspect of Imposter Syndrome is its ability to mask itself behind a facade of competence and achievement, leaving you feeling isolated in your struggle and unsure of where to turn for support.

I'm currently working with a highly successful executive who, on a daily basis, found himself battling with the false narrative that he wasn't good enough, or qualified enough, or savvy enough (etc.) to be leading his organization, despite all evidence to the contrary.  I'll call him Bruce for the purpose of this email (and confidentiality).

Bruce is a C-Suite executive in a billion dollar organization with a track record of delivering results.  Yet, up until recently, he lived in fear of 'being found out', believing he must be a fraud to have maintained his role and his results over the course of his career.

On the surface, Bruce seems to have it all going on.  Beneath that surface, however, Bruce was living in constant turmoil with his self-image.  It was exhausting, and it was permeating every area of his life, diminishing his effectiveness slowly but surely, while also sapping the joy from his life.

His bank account is healthy but his soul was starving.  Imposter Syndrome was the insidious constant presence responsible for this gradual demise.

Finally Bruce reached a point where the pain was so great he knew he had to take action.  The consequences of inaction were too overwhelming.

So where does Imposter Syndrome come from, and more importantly, what's the solve??

Let me address the first question first.

Imposter Syndrome is what results when years of internal conditioning have been allowed to incubate.

Understand that every thought that is consciously entertained for a period of time flows to our subconscious mind as FACT, and then the subconscious works 24 / 7 to create that thought as reality.

It doesn't matter whether that thought was originally your own, or you allowed someone else's opinion to claim truth in your thinking.

What the conscious mind chooses, flows to the subconscious as fact. In essence, you are programming the supercomputer of your mind to create your reality, be it intentional or habitual.

The solve?

Reprogramming your B.S.- your Belief System.

How?

Change the tape.  Flip the Script.  Choose a different narrative, one that serves you, and others.

Easy to do?

Not at all.  It's likely the hardest work you'll do in life.

Essential to your well-being and quality of life?

No question.

Not sure how to proceed?  Looking for support? Let's talk.

And Bruce?  Well, after several months of working together in the profoundly transformational experience of being in a coaching relationship, Bruce is finding peace.  He's been diligent about creating a different narrative of who he really is, a narrative anchored in a healthy, empowering perspective that paints a far different picture than the one he'd allowed for so many years...a self-image that nurtures his soul.

I can assure you, there is a solve that will dramatically impact the quality of your thinking, which, in turn, will do the same for the quality of the rest of your life.

I can say this with all assurance because I've seen it happen more times than I could begin to count over the last couple of decades in leading and coaching teams and individuals.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO LIVE CAPTIVE TO IMPOSTER SYNDROME.

It's your choice.

The quality of the rest of your life is determined by the quality of your choices today.

Like Bruce did, I hope you choose wisely.

All my best,

Deb
