Will unrest in HK affect the Globalsources Fashion Trade Show?

It's like asking, will the tariff tussles between Donald and Xi effect the Canton Fair? They did. My friend Fred has been going to the Canton Fair for 20+ years and he shared with me his surprise how quiet it was at the spring 2018 Canton Fair. I just returned from the Sourcing at Magic trade show in Las Vegas where the number of exhibitors and foot traffic was less than the previous August show. There is no doubt that the Globalsources fashion trade show happening at the end of October will be smaller than the year before. Aside from the world wide economic slowdown, a big reason is the social unrest happening in HK but does that mean there is no value in going to the show as a buyer or seller? I am going and I will make it worth my while. Let me share with you how I will do it.

First, do the math. Compare how much you will spend going to the show with how much you will profit from finding one good factory that produces 10,000 units over three years. If your profit per piece is just $1 then you clearly cover the expense of going to the trade show. The key is to go there with a concrete business plan in mind and be smart in how you work the show. If you just go to see what is there, then you might as well deduct the expense as a vacation. If a factory gets just one new repeat customer then the factory covers the expense of going to the show. There will be fewer factories and fewer buyers due to the unrest in HK but the show will go on and buyers and sellers will connect. The key is having the right attitude, strategy and will power.

My friend Fred Robinson, who I mentioned above, went to the Canton Fair in spring and found a supplier to make Hawaiin flavoured mints in quality tins with his logo on it. Both Fred and the factory benefited from going to the Canton Fair. I just Skyped with Fred and Fred confirmed that he is going to the Globalsources this October regardless of the unrest. Fred sells products like cigars, coffee, t-shirts, scarves and hats under his legacy brand Hula Girl. Here is a picture of the results that he got from the last Globalsources trade show.

I exhibited at the Sourcing at Magic trade show in Las Vegas this last August, which was definitely slow, but I came away with 50 leads and three of them are in the process of finalizing orders with the factory I worked for, www.thaisonspgarment.com. Why? Because I did a lot of marketing before the show and I worked the show floor like a K9 secret service canine (you know, the ones you see being led against foot traffic waiting to get through security at LAX). We only get out, what we put in, at trade shows. If your feet hurt at the end of each day and you are losing your voice then you are doing the right thing.

My friend Janet Seltzer is a fashion sourcing consultant that will be attending the Globalsources fashion trade show next month. She is not phased by the HK unrest. I asked her if she benefitted from the last Globalsources trade show and here is what she said, "Yes I met an eye-mask supplier that is making custom sleeping eye-masks with very small moqs at a great price." Below is a picture of Janet and I having an indepth discussion about shoe manufacturing in Vietnam with Julia who is starting her shoe brand in Vietnam.

Tips for making profitable connections

Here are some tips for factories committed to attending the Globalsources trade show in HK.

1) Focus on buying houses with offices in Hong Kong. Hong Kong residents know how to deal with the unrest and will make it to the show. Search online for your target customers that have offices in HK and contact the offices before the show. If they don't come to your booth then plan to visit their offices since you are in HK already.

2) Send out an email blast to all your existing customers and potential customers you are pursuing. Find out if they are going. If they go, make sure they come to your booth for a friendly catch up conversation. Show them your latest developments. Even if they are placing orders in your factory, ask for referrals.

3) Post on social media and tell the world what you are good at producing and make it clear that you will be in HK and want to meet new buyers. If you spend one hour everyday for 30 days before the show posting on social media then I guarantee you will either get some "ahead of time appointments" or simply find new customers online even if they are not going to the show. Use the show as a talking point starting now.

4) Reach out to your personal network and ask if your business network (not target customers) are going to the Globalsources show. If they are, great, meet them for coffee and ask for referrals the BNI way. If they are not, ask them to ask their business network to see who is going to the show - ask for introductions. Trade shows are 70% networking and 30% discussing orders.

5) Use the tools that Globalsources has created for you and your soon to be customers.
