The Unsung Heroes: A Week in the Heart of Nigeria's Oil Fields

The Unsung Heroes: A Week in the Heart of Nigeria's Oil Fields

A couple of weeks ago, I stepped out of my corporate office and into the beating heart of our operations. I embarked on a week-long inspection of our facilities, and what I witnessed left me in awe and filled with profound respect.

Our asset, responsible for nearly 5% of Nigeria's oil production, is a living, breathing entity, kept alive by the dedication and expertise of our field officers, who turn the valves come rain or shine.

From the moment we arrived at the first location, the passion was palpable. A warm smile and a swift briefing greeted us at the gate. The tagging-in process, ensuring all personnel are accounted for in emergencies, was executed with precision in just two minutes.

Then we met him - the superintendent with over three decades of experience. His eyes lit up as he referred to the facility as "my asset." That simple phrase spoke volumes about his dedication and ownership. As we toured "his asset," inspecting critical parts, I felt a surge of inspiration.

But it wasn't just the senior staff who impressed. Everywhere I looked, I saw commitment incarnate:

  • Field officers in their coveralls, working tirelessly under the sun while we corporate folks enjoy our air-conditioned offices in fancy suits.
  • Ms Charity Chukwuka diligently captured our tour with her intrinsically safe camera.
  • The lady gardener, meticulously trimmed the plants at the FOC entrance, adding a touch of beauty to the industrial landscape.
  • The E&I lead ensured every electrical and instrumentation aspect was in top shape.

These were mostly ladies, but that is not the story!

I watched in admiration as field superintendents called for drills, responded to calls, and marshalled out daily activities with clockwork precision. Our AGG plants were up and running, and gas generators were on point - showcasing our commitment to environmental stewardship and clean energy.

Our Joint Venture partners from NNPC/NUIMS, who joined us to check on their investments, were visibly impressed. The housekeeping standards across facilities were impeccable, but it was the human element - the dedication and diligence of our field operations staff - that truly stood out.

As we reached the final location of our inspection, nature decided to test our resolve. An unprecedented downpour began, but it didn't deter our dedicated production operations lead – Chima. He continued his brief and then invited us outside to view the facilities he was discussing.

I'll admit, my first thought was, "Heck no!" I was trying to maintain “steeze and composure” and wasn't keen on getting drenched while wearing an oversized coverall. But then it hit me - this was their daily reality. Rain or shine, these incredible individuals press on, ensuring steady production while prioritizing safety above all else.

That realization was humbling. I changed my mind and stepped out into the rain. Let me tell you, I'm still recovering from that experience! It gave me a newfound appreciation for our field staff. They truly are built differently, their resilience and dedication is a true show of their character and professionalism.

Another eye-opening moment came when one of our team members forgot his safety boots, assuming he could get by without them. How wrong he was! He was immediately stopped from even approaching the field location. @HeirsEnergies, we don’t just say safety; it is ingrained in every action and decision. Thankfully, the superintendent had a spare pair on hand - another example of their preparedness and commitment to safety protocols.

A special shout-out to my dearest Emiko Carpe and Avwerosuoghene Money , #HeirsEnergies young engineers who represent the bright future of our industry. Your work in the field fills me with pride and hope for what's to come.

I must also commend Victor, our logistics maestro, who ensured our transportation was seamless throughout the visit. And to my brother/colleague and Chief Engineer, Engr. Onos Akhabhau (CIPM, COREN, MNSE, ASME) - thank you for introducing us to the culinary delight that is Rivers State's fisherman soup. The portion size alone deserves a national honor (but that's a story for another day!).

To all our behind-the-scenes heroes keeping the production flowing - this post is for you. Your work often goes unnoticed by the corporate office, but you are the lifeblood of our operations. Your dedication, your smiles in the face of challenging conditions, your ownership of your roles - it all adds up to the success of our company and indeed, our nation's energy sector.

As I reflect on this experience, I'm reminded of a quote by Thomas Edison: "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work." Our field teams embody this spirit, seeing every raindrop, every safety check, every valve turned as an opportunity to excel.

To all aspiring engineers and energy professionals: take note. The heart of our industry doesn't beat in boardrooms or on spreadsheets alone. It pulses in the fields, platforms, and facilities where dedicated professionals brave the elements and challenges every day to keep our nation's energy flowing.

Thank you, to every one of you out there for making it happen. Your work matters more than you know.

This is so beautifully written Chidimma, well done! Great to see your appreciation of the guys out in the field - and might I add that they do their stuff night or day equally brilliantly - I know this firsthand from 10years of field operations experience. Shout out to Chima, Charity and all the other crew members who continue to embody and inspire professionalism and performance. I'll end my comment by requesting that you continue to support them in the best way you can - directly or through advocacy.
