Unveiling the Engineering Marvel: Exploring the Physics behind the Single-Stage-to-Orbit Horizontal Takeoff/Horizontal Landing Titans Spaceplane

In a nutshell:

  1. The Titans Spaceplanes use efficient turbofan engines to climb out of the dense lower atmosphere before firing our rocket engines.
  2. The spaceplane stays subsonic until it reaches the thin part of the atmosphere.
  3. Once the spaceplane is in thin air, we use a dive maneuver to assist in acceleration to supersonic speed so we can save fuel by making gravity work for us.
  4. The spaceplane's vertical lift is being produced by both the wings and the rocket engines - again saving fuel.
  5. The ramjets we use along with our main rocket engines during our acceleration to hypersonic speed are much more efficient and have a much higher specific impulse than rocket engines.
  6. Peak temperatures during reentry are reduced by using a shallow lifting reentry like the former NASA Space Shuttle orbiter.
  7. For thermal protection, read the Re-entry Revolution: From Heat to Control section of our Revolutionizing Space Travel analysis.
