Austria advances hydrogen subsidy law

Austria's government has approved legislation to subsidize renewable hydrogen production, allocating €400 million in fixed-premium subsidies for 2024, with an additional €420 million planned for 2025-26. These funds will be distributed through a competitive bidding system, potentially using the European hydrogen bank's "auction-as-a-service" scheme. This allows EU states to allocate funds domestically, with a second auction expected later this year. The law, which is now under parliamentary review, supports projects that could start between 2027 and 2030. The government anticipates that the €820 million budget will facilitate the production of 18,000-40,000 tons per year of renewable hydrogen, aiming for subsidy costs between €2 and €4.50 per kilogram.

Sens. Ossoff & Graham, Rep. Johnson’s Bipartisan Hydrogen Aviation Strategy Act Becomes Law

Office of U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff's bipartisan Hydrogen Aviation Strategy Act is now law. This groundbreaking legislation mandates the Federal Aviation Administration to develop strategies for hydrogen fuel in aviation, promising to revolutionize air travel with cleaner energy. This move could significantly boost job creation in Georgia, enhance American energy security, and drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions in the sector. With the aviation industry striving for carbon neutrality, this law marks a pivotal step towards harnessing hydrogen's potential for sustainable air travel.

Brussels green lights €1.4bn in state subsidy for hydrogen projects

The European Commission has greenlit significant state subsidies for 11 companies, including Airbus, BMW, and Michelin, to enhance hydrogen technology for transport. This approval is part of a broader initiative to replace fossil fuels across Europe. The "Hy2Move" project, supported by multiple EU countries, aims to catalyze €3.3bn in private investments for developing hydrogen fuel cells and storage solutions. This effort is the latest in a series of projects under the IPCEI framework, pushing the total state aid for hydrogen to €18.9bn.

USHA Member Spotlight

The maritime industry, contributing nearly 6% of global emissions, is under significant pressure to undergo a transformation to meet environmental standards. Zero Emission Industries (ZEI), one of our founding members, is at the forefront of this change, particularly in the small boat market. ZEI's focus on hydrogen fuel cell power offers a practical and impactful solution for decarbonizing vessels under 50 feet, crucial for first responder missions. Unlike traditional marine diesel engines that contribute heavily to air, water, and noise pollution, hydrogen fuel cells present a clean alternative, providing continuous power with minimal emissions. This shift is not just about adhering to new regulations—it's about rethinking marine energy to support sustainable, long-term operations. As we look towards a cleaner maritime future, the role of hydrogen in small boats highlights the industry's potential for significant environmental impact reduction. Stay tuned as ZEI leads the charge, transforming marine propulsion into a model of modern sustainability. Learn more here.
