The Value of Coaching for Development

The Value of Coaching for Development

by Dr. Ian Turnipseed, Executive Communication Coach

I was reading an article the other day about coaching as an industry. Now, that I have a Ph.D. and have been a nerd my whole life, reading academic articles is a fun time for me!

I won’t bore you with the specifics, but the point of the article was that coaching requires participants to be open to understanding the world differently.

That’s interesting. That means any time someone engages a coach, a few decisions must be made:

  1. The client is willing to reframe their understanding to improve their current position, whatever that is.
  2. The coach must explain their expertise and process in such a way that a client feels confident that this can be done.

I meet people all over the globe daily, and that’s not hyperbole. When they agree to engage in coaching, it means they are deciding to reframe their world and understand how to make their lives better. Also, I have done an excellent job of explaining how I will help them do that.

I believe many clients and coaches may not consciously consider these two questions, but they should.

Before engaging a coach, it’s crucial to remember that you’re agreeing to reframe your world for a purpose, and the chosen coach should demonstrate how they intend to achieve that.

For us, it’s through our extensive educational and experimental backgrounds that we leverage to apply coaching in a customized manner for our clients. Other coaches may employ different approaches. However, regardless of the method, understanding and clarifying these aspects enhances the coaching experience, which is ultimately the goal.
