Walmart gets an early win with its Mean Girls Black Friday ad

We know what can happen when a brand taps into the power of nostalgia, especially in the form of a TV or movie cast reunion. And Walmart’s latest Black Friday campaign is truly giving the people what they want with its Mean Girls revival.

Bringing together three of the four iconic members of the Plastics (I’m guessing Regina George is still channeling her anger into sports somewhere), Walmart brought audiences back to Mean Girl World by kicking off a series of commercials to draw attention to its Black Friday offerings. The campaign has given Walmart a pretty obvious brand win, as it’s the most engaged brand overall when looking at coverage of Black Friday, with a significant number of articles to boot.

The retailer has earned more than 46k engagements to the 3.6k articles written about it since Nov 1st, easily surpassing Amazon in the second spot, even with Amazon having around a thousand more articles written about it.

Taking a closer look at the top people mentioned in articles about Black Friday, the actors, and the characters they played in the movie, were dominating in terms of public interest. Lindsay Lohan (Cady Heron), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners), and Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith), were the top three people mentioned overall.

Fans of the movie can find comfort in knowing that even more content is on its way, with a new commercial airing every Wednesday before Black Friday, and on TikTok Walmart is keeping the momentum going with more promotional videos that include other beloved members of the Mean Girls cast.

Rockstar Games makes a splash with trailer teaser

Rockstar Games — the creator of the iconic Grand Theft Auto series — took social media by storm this morning by celebrating its own 25th birthday. The brand thanked their fans for their support over the years, and announced that they would be releasing the first trailer for the new GTA game in a month’s time.

This saw huge levels of engagement on Instagram in particular, with more than a million likes on Rockstar’s post in just a few hours, while the Facebook version of the post is already up to a quarter million engagements as I type, and predicted to grow significantly in its own right.

The news had been speculated about by news publishers late last night, with almost 3,000 articles written about GTA in the course of the last 24 hours. Speculation about the announcement began around 10pm EST on Tuesday evening, and both media and public interest grew from there, with the top article coming from Bloomberg.
