WC 24/10/14 AWS Whats New

Whether you’re just starting your cloud journey or you’re a seasoned pro, there’s something here for everyone. Let’s dive into what’s new and why it matters to you.

Data Management and Integration

This week, AWS has introduced several updates that enhance data management and integration capabilities. Amazon QuickSight has expanded its integration with Amazon EventBridge, allowing you to automate workflows like continuous deployment and backups with events delivered in near real-time. This means you can save time by having these processes run automatically, freeing you up to focus on more strategic tasks.

Amazon DataZone has introduced new project designations, enabling team members to be assigned specific roles such as consumer, steward, or viewer. This makes collaboration smoother and ensures that everyone knows their responsibilities, enhancing both productivity and governance within your projects. Additionally, Amazon DataZone now supports AWS IAM Identity Center account instances, allowing administrators to set up single sign-on users without needing an entire AWS organization configured.

AWS Data Exchange now provides APIs for data grants, enabling secure and programmatic data sharing across AWS accounts. This simplifies the process of sharing data while maintaining security and control. DynamoDB has also made some user experience enhancements, including the ability to favourite tables for quicker access, making managing your frequently used tables much more efficient.

Performance and Scalability

For those in the AWS GovCloud (US) regions, Amazon MemoryDB is now available. This fully managed, Redis-compatible database offers ultra-fast performance and durable storage, perfect for critical applications like payment card analytics and IoT events processing. It’s a game-changer for anyone needing high-speed, reliable data handling.

In Africa, specifically the Cape Town region, Amazon EC2 High Memory instances are now available. These instances are ideal for running SAP HANA workloads, offering up to 6TB of memory. This is a big win for businesses needing high-performance computing power in this region.

Amazon EFS has doubled its read throughput to 60 GiB/s, making it even more powerful for AI and machine learning workloads. This boost in performance will help you handle large-scale data processing tasks more efficiently. Amazon RDS has expanded support for M7g and R7g database instances to more regions, offering better performance and cost efficiency. This means you can optimise your database performance across a wider range of locations.

Automation and Monitoring

QuickSight Reporting has added the ability to trigger scheduled reports via API. This means you can now automate the distribution of your reports, ensuring that the right people get the right information at the right time without manual intervention. The AWS Lambda console has been upgraded with real-time log analytics via CloudWatch Logs Live Tail and a built-in Metrics Insights dashboard. These enhancements provide better visibility and faster troubleshooting for your serverless applications.

AWS CodePipeline now supports automatic retry on stage failure, improving pipeline reliability. This means fewer manual interventions and more resilient pipelines. AWS CodeBuild now supports managed network access control lists (NACLs) for reserved capacity fleets, enhancing security by allowing you to define rules to control network traffic in and out of your build environment.

Security and Compliance

Amazon Verified Permissions is now HIPAA eligible, enabling healthcare and life sciences organisations to use the service for permissions management. This ensures that sensitive data is handled securely and in compliance with regulations. Amazon SES has introduced a new feature that allows you to set a custom maximum delivery time for emails, giving you better control over your email delivery strategy and ensuring timely and relevant communications.

AI and Machine Learning

Amazon Bedrock has enhanced its model evaluation capabilities to support custom models. This allows you to evaluate and fine-tune your AI models more effectively, ensuring they meet your specific needs and standards. Amazon SageMaker Studio notebooks now support G6e instances, powered by NVIDIA L40s Tensor Core GPUs. This provides up to 2.5x better performance for interactive model training and deployment, especially for generative AI tasks.

Developer Tools and Services

Amazon Q Business has added support for using connector metadata to improve search relevance and offers embedding capabilities for application interfaces. These enhancements boost productivity and user experience. AWS Beanstalk now supports Python 3.12, bringing improved error messaging, better performance, and enhanced usability. This update makes it easier to deploy and manage Python applications on AWS.

AWS CloudShell now integrates with Amazon Q CLI, allowing you to use natural language to generate AWS commands. This reduces the need to search documentation and boosts productivity by providing personalised command suggestions.

Storage and Networking

Amazon AppStream 2.0 now supports custom shared network storage, making it easier for users to access and collaborate on shared files. This enhances collaboration and data security. Amazon S3 now supports AWS Region and bucket name filters for the ListBuckets API, simplifying applications that need to determine bucket locations across multiple regions.

That’s all for this week! If you find this useful like and share and I’ll keep doing this weekly.
