WC 24/10/28 AWS Whats New

Welcome to another week of updates from the world of AWS. Whether you’re just starting your cloud journey or you’re a seasoned pro, there’s something here for everyone. Let’s dive into what’s new and why it matters to you.

Enhancements in AI and Machine Learning

AWS has been making strides in the AI and ML space, and this week is no different. Amazon SageMaker Notebook Instances now support JupyterLab 4, bringing faster performance and new features like improved search and replace functionality. This update is all about boosting productivity for data scientists and ML engineers, making it easier to manage large notebooks and integrate useful extensions.

On the generative AI front, Amazon Bedrock has introduced support for cost allocation tags on inference profiles. This means you can now track and manage your GenAI costs more effectively, categorising them by department or application. Additionally, fine-tuning for Anthropic’s Claude 3 Haiku model is now generally available, allowing businesses to customise this compact and efficient model to better suit their specific needs.

Database and Storage Innovations

For those working with databases, there are some exciting updates. Amazon RDS now supports cross-region automated backups in new regions, enhancing disaster recovery capabilities. This feature ensures that your critical data is backed up and can be restored quickly in case of regional outages.

Amazon Aurora has also rolled out support for rolling upgrades for operating system updates, which means you can now upgrade your OS without downtime, maintaining read access throughout the process. This is a big win for maintaining high availability and performance.

Networking and Security Enhancements

Security and networking are always top priorities, and AWS has introduced several updates to enhance these areas. Amazon WorkSpaces now supports desktop traffic over TCP/UDP port 443, simplifying network configurations and improving connectivity. This change helps organisations manage outbound access rules more efficiently.

AWS Network Firewall has added support for configurable TCP idle timeout, allowing you to align firewall settings with your application’s needs. This flexibility is crucial for applications with long-lived connections, such as financial systems and databases.

Developer Tools and Services

Developers, there’s plenty for you too! AWS Lambda now supports AWS Fault Injection Service (FIS) actions, enabling you to test the resilience of your applications by simulating faults. This is a great way to ensure your applications can handle unexpected issues and maintain high availability.

AWS CodeBuild has introduced automatic retries for builds, reducing the need for manual intervention when builds fail. This feature helps streamline the CI/CD process, making it more efficient and less prone to interruptions.

Real-Time and Edge Computing

For those building real-time applications, AWS AppSync has launched new serverless WebSocket APIs. This makes it easier to create real-time web and mobile experiences without managing the underlying infrastructure. Whether it’s live sports scores, group chats, or notifications, this update simplifies the development process.

Amazon EC2 has also expanded its instance offerings with the introduction of M8g instances in the Dallas Local Zone. These instances are powered by AWS Graviton4 processors, providing enhanced performance and energy efficiency for a variety of workloads.

Analytics and Data Management

Data enthusiasts will be pleased to know that AWS Supply Chain now offers embedded analytics powered by Amazon QuickSight. This feature provides out-of-the-box dashboards and custom reporting capabilities, making it easier to gain insights from your supply chain data.

Amazon Redshift has also seen several updates, including support for incremental refresh on materialised views for data lake tables and integration with Amazon Bedrock for generative AI. These enhancements improve query performance and make it easier to incorporate AI into your data analytics workflows.

That’s a wrap for this week’s AWS updates! From AI and ML advancements to database innovations and developer tools, there’s a lot to explore and take advantage of. Whether you’re looking to enhance your application’s performance, improve security, or streamline your development process, AWS has something new to offer. Stay tuned for more updates next week, and happy building!
