"We Live in a Post-Truth World."

Hi Friends,

The recent news of an open letter (now at 27573 signatures) to pause AI development came as a shock to some and a much needed breath of fresh air to others. Many thought leaders have been cynical about the true benefit to society, given the fact the cat is out of the bag already and countries like Russia or China are surely not going to pause their developing AI systems.

So what is all of the negative hype about? What could go wrong other than AIs taking over the world?

Let’s explore how we live in a post-truth world and how objective truth will evolve with AI:

  1. Deepfakes and Misinformation: The rise of deepfake technology, driven by AI, has the potential to create realistic yet fake audio, video, and images, further blurring the line between reality and fiction. This could result in an increase in misinformation, making it difficult for individuals to discern the truth and leading to potential societal discord.
  2. Algorithmic Bias: AI systems are often trained on large datasets that may contain biases from the real world. As a result, these biases may be perpetuated by AI systems, leading to unfair treatment or discrimination in areas such as hiring, lending, and medical care.
  3. Surveillance and Privacy: Advances in AI could enable governments and corporations to collect, analyze, and use personal data on an unprecedented scale. This may lead to a loss of privacy and increased surveillance, undermining trust and civil liberties.
  4. Job Displacement: AI has the potential to automate many jobs, resulting in job displacement and increased unemployment. While new opportunities may emerge, the transition period could be challenging for many workers, particularly those in industries most susceptible to automation.
  5. AI in Warfare: The development of AI-powered weapons and autonomous military systems could lead to a new arms race and raise ethical concerns about the use of AI in warfare. This may result in increased tensions and the potential for conflict.

Life in a Post-Truth World

To be honest, the media hasn’t being doing the best job of painting AI in a favorable light or integrating its usage into our culture in a positive way. My favorite quote that comes from the New York Times essay written by Yuval Noah Harari, Tristan Harris, and Aza Raskin states,

“Drug companies cannot sell people new medicines without first subjecting their products to rigorous safety checks. Biotech labs cannot release new viruses into the public sphere in order to impress shareholders with their wizardry. Likewise, AI systems with the power of GPT-4 and beyond should not be entangled with the lives of billions of people at a pace faster than the cultures can safely absorb them.”

That last sentence is a haunting echo of the truth.

As we navigate this new reality, it's crucial to address these concerns and work together to build a responsible AI ecosystem. Here are some potential strategies to consider:

  1. Collaboration between tech companies, governments, and international organizations to develop and enforce ethical guidelines, regulations, and standards.
  2. Encouraging transparency and open discourse on AI development, ensuring public involvement in decision-making processes.
  3. Supporting research focused on AI safety, ethics, and long-term impact, alongside performance improvements.
  4. Fostering international cooperation to ensure a global approach to AI development and regulation.
  5. Investing in education and workforce development programs to prepare individuals for an AI-driven world.

While the future of AI is uncertain, it is our collective responsibility to shape it in a way that benefits society as a whole.

One of the top questions I get asked is: what is the difference between Bing, Bard, and Chat GPT (other than why can’t these tech companies come up with better names for them 😅)? Here is a visual that helps break that down:
