We the People
Globally, today, "We" are more divided than ever.
Nationally "We" have replaced community with prejudice and ethnocentrism.
"We" point fingers, ignoring the fact that the enemy has become "We the people."
Now "We" are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether our democracy or any democracy can long endure. We are met today on a great battle-field of that war. As we look across this great battlefield, with battle lines and ideologies so clearly defined. Now we have come to realize, that the enemy is us.
To this end, it is becoming apparent that war is not the answer. The answer is much more dramatic, the answer requires more sacrifice than ever before in our history. The answer it seems falls not on just a few chosen patriots who wager their life. No, the answer now falls on us all.
Each one of us must now sacrifice our hatred and our prejudice that we have become so fond of. We must now hold in contempt the same hatred and prejudice that now so clearly define us.
The world will long remember what we say here, and we can never forget what we ourselves do here. It is for us to be dedicated here to the unfinished work for which so many have toiled for and thus far so nobly advanced.
It is for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that we take increased devotion to that cause for this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
As a nation, our position has become untenable. After decades of war and the cold war, make no mistake the enemy has become us.
How long will we stand idly by?
It is up to us, to reach across the aisle that is separating us. That divide we peer across with disdain to then judge those on the other side. We must reach across our isle to those who look from the other side at us, with equal contempt.
A Democracy manages those with differing opinions, based on differing experiences, differing emotions, and economic status. A Democracy manages those so that they can be together.
It is a Social Contract that has managed, for over two hundred years to preserve integrity. That same Social Contract today lays broken by the enemy. And the Enemy is us.
Today, without a doubt the ingratitude of man and the iniquity of the times is robbing us of our future. How long will we stand by watching, before we decide to reach across the aisle that is separating us.
Make no mistake, the future of our children and our children's children is now at stake on a wager that only understanding and forgiveness will satisfy. We must now hold in contempt the same hatred and prejudice that now so clearly define us.
It is for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that we take increased devotion to that cause for this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
