Week Two College Football Recap
My thoughts on Week 2 of the College Football Season:
Biggest games from this past weekend:
3 Texas at 10 Michigan - Texas went into Ann Arbor and dominated for a 31-12 win. Quinn Ewers and the Longhorn offense looked great across the board. Michigan just doesn't have the horses at QB to win these big matchups this season, they should still end up with a good overall record but the CFP is out of the question.
Northern Illinois at 5 Notre Dame - This was not supposed to be a noteworthy game. However, Notre Dame decided to take a week off at home with a stunning 16-14 loss to NIU. One week after an impressive road performance at Texas A&M. The defense is solid and I am sure they will rebound but one glaring area of weakness is through 2 weeks Riley Leonard has 0 passing TD's.
14 Tennessee vs 24 NC State - This game was played in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium. The Vols looked really good and were not seriously threatened past the first few drives of the game winning 51-10. Nico Iamaleava is legit and while he may not run as often, I think is the closest comparison to Cam Newton that we have seen in college football. NC State should still have a good season by their standards but outside of KC Concepcion do not have playmakers that are standing out at this point.
Closer games than they should have been:
South Florida at 4 Alabama - For whatever reason, South Florida has given Alabama fits the past two seasons. Alex Golesh is rebuilding the Bulls program after joining from Tennessee last year so there is some familiarity but the Tide have overwhelming advantages in talent. This game was also played in Tuscaloosa in good weather conditions. A 28 point fourth quarter allowed Alabama to pull away for a 42-16 win after a 14-13 score with 9 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.
Boise State at 7 Oregon - On paper, Oregon should be dominant after landing several pieces through the transfer portal including QB Dillon Gabriel and WR Evan Stewart among others. To this point though, they have been keeping games close with a mixture of inconsistent offensive line play and turnovers this season. Ashton Jeanty had another strong performance out of the backfield for the Broncos rushing for 192 yards and 3 TD's. Oregon needed two fourth quarter scores including a field goal as time expired to win 37-34.
Bowling Green at 8 Penn State - This game had James Franklin's signature all over it as Penn State was down 24-20 at the half before taking a 10 point lead throughout most of the second half and ending with a 34-27 win. Following the very common theme at PSU of playing to the level of their competition.

Houston at 15 Oklahoma - The Sooners followed in Nittany Lions footsteps barely putting away a struggling Houston squad 16-12 in Norman. Depth at WR is a concern for Oklahoma as Deion Burks left the game at one point. Jackson Arnold finished 19-32 for 174 yards and 2 TD's while his counterpart Donovan Smith had a nice day for Houston going 24-28 for 260 and 1 TD.
Road blocks -
23 Georgia Tech lost on the road at Syracuse 31-28 after starting the year 2-0 and entering the Top 25 for a week.
19 Kansas lost on the road at Illinois 23-17.
Surprises -
A week after barely scoring any points against Old Dominion, Shane Beamer rallied South Carolina for a 31-6 blowout at Kentucky. Transfer QB Brock Vandagriff finished 3-10 for 30 yards and 1 INT 👀 things are not likely to improve this week in Lexington as Georgia visits the Wildcats this coming Saturday night.
The California Golden Bears played an impressive game on the road at Auburn without several key starters available leaving with a 21-14 victory. Cal capitalized on 5 Auburn turnovers with 4 INT's coming from QB Payton Thorne.
