Welcoming the newest member to our family: Raphael’s story

Our people are at the heart of everything we do at Chivas Brothers. As a business, we want to ensure we foster an environment where everyone feels welcome, cared for and has the opportunity to grow.

With this in mind, we constantly review our policies and practices to ensure our employees are supported in the best possible way, professionally and personally. Starting a family is an exciting time, but it can be an overwhelming time for many.

That’s why we recently took the decision to extend our paternity leave offering to eight weeks’ fully paid leave, giving parents the opportunity to spend valuable time with their child.

We sat down with Raphael Jouve, Head of Product Range & Innovation, to hear about his recent parental leave experience.

Q: Raphael, could you please tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m originally from France, although I’ve been living and working abroad for the past 13 years across Germany, China & the UK.  I’ve been part of the Chivas Brothers family for six years now, and I’m currently Head of Product Range & Innovation for The Glenlivet. I live with my family in London, and we recently welcomed our newest member, Noah, who is now five months old.

Q: What was your reaction when you first heard about the policy updates?

I felt a great sense of appreciation and support. Knowing that my employer actively prioritises the wellbeing of mums and dads and recognises the importance of family life made me also feel a great sense of pride.

For me personally, the announcement came at a timely moment just before Noah was born. Knowing I had eight weeks of fully paid leave was a huge relief and allowed me to focus fully on my family during those precious early days. The fact that I am allowed to take my remaining leave within the first 12 months after my son’s birth gave me that extra flexibility to plan for the long term.

Q: Becoming a parent is an exciting time but can be overwhelming for many – particularly as they often need to juggle work and family commitments. Can you tell us about your experience and what the extended time off has allowed you to do?

The extended paternity leave policy allowed me to spend two weeks with Noah when he was born to support my partner in the early stages of parenting. I’m also planning on taking the remainder of my leave when my partner returns to work. This will allow me to spend some extra time with my son before he starts going to nursery.

Overall, the updated policy has had a profoundly positive impact on me and my partner, and it has enhanced our wider family experience. We’re sharing responsibilities and this teamwork has strengthened our bond as a family.

I believe that parents benefit immensely from being present during those precious early phases of their child’s life. Not only does it give parents time to adjust to a new way of family life, but it also helps deepen their connection with their child. For me, I was able to play a more active role in night-time routines to support my partner and was also able to witness Noah’s first smile – something for which I’ll always be grateful.

Q: How have you been supported through the experience?

Chivas Brothers has been an exceptionally supportive employer, providing not just the time off but also understanding and flexibility around the time I have chosen to take off. I think it’s important to have an open channel of communication with your manager and HR about your needs and expectations during this period, as it sets the foundation for a supportive work environment.

I feel that becoming a parent has positively impacted my work relationships. The shared experience among colleagues who are also parents has made the workplace feel even more like a tight-knit, supportive community.

Q: Do you have any top tips or advice for soon-to-be-fathers?

Make sure you fully embrace and make the most of your time off. For me, it was an invaluable opportunity to bond with my child and support my partner during what was a transformative time.
