What Amsterdam Taught Me About Self-Motivation and Documentation

I'm coming to you live from Amsterdam, where I've been for the past 24 days. I want to share something real with you about an unexpected lesson I'm learning here about self-motivation and the importance of documentation.

When I arrived, I set this goal to post a Dutch word of the day, every single day. Sounds simple, right?

Well, it hasn't quite gone as planned.

At first, I was all in. But because of the time difference, I'd stay up super late, phone in hand, sometimes literally falling asleep mid-post. There I was, trying to share my Dutch word of the day with everyone back home while being in another time zone. It worked for the first week, even though it was tough.

But as days went by, something shifted. I started missing posts. Occasionally, I would get a few "Hey, you're not doing your word of the day posts anymore?" But you know what? I didn't feel guilty. I felt... apathetic. I just kind of stopped caring for a while. "After all, no one was paying me to post or entertain them," I thought at one point. So, the days kept passing, and I kept not posting, although I did keep documenting!

It wasn't until I looked back at all the days I'd missed that it really hit me. I realized I was missing out on something important - not for others, but for myself. And that's because I love documenting my experiences. It's like creating a personal time capsule.

That's when I had this big revelation: I'm not doing this for anyone else. I'm doing it for me. To capture these moments, these words, these little pieces of Dutch culture that are becoming part of my daily life right now.

So, here's what I'm learning:

  1. Procrastination isn't always the enemy: Sometimes, it's a sign you need to reconnect with your 'why'.
  2. Beware the creep of apathy: It's okay to take breaks, but don't let indifference rob you of what truly matters to you.
  3. Documentation is self-care: It's not just about sharing with others but creating a record for your future self.
  4. True motivation is intrinsic: When you're doing something for yourself, it feels entirely different.

Now, I'm getting back into posting those Dutch words. Not because I have to, but because I want to. For me. Because each word, each post, is a little piece of my Amsterdam story that's still unfolding.

So, here's what I want to leave you with: If you find yourself losing steam on a project or goal, pause and ask yourself - "Am I doing this for me? Does this matter to me?" Sometimes, reconnecting with that personal motivation can make all the difference.

What about you? Have you ever had a moment where you realized you were missing out on something important to you? Think about it. And if you're comfortable, share your story in the comments. Let's learn from each other!

Alright, that's it from me here in Amsterdam. Tot ziens, everyone! That's "goodbye" in Dutch, by the way. Keep learning, keep documenting, and remember - it's your story. Make it count.

Love this!! I need to flow in such: “Am I doing this for me”? I really have never really done that. It has always been about serving others. Thank you!! On that note - I sent you and your honey a note….. Thank you!!

That's great and great effort Antréa Ferguson, MSPH!! 😃 ❣ I can relate to falling asleep midpoint of something is usually how I've been doing lately. For a while now, I've been intending to learn Sicilian, particularly after my morning prayer rituals. I believe it's gonna take better planning, executing, and accountability!!
