What Even Is Training?

What Even Is Training?

Hey, Sales Leaders!

Today, we're diving deep into a fundamental question: "What even is training?" This topic was the focus of our recent 4-Hour live Launchpad360 Sales Training course, and I'm excited to share some key insights with you.

Over the last 18 months, we have conducted countless training sessions, motivating individuals to become better business leaders, more effective executives, and more successful in marketing and selling their products. However, like many other business and sales training solutions, we noticed a troubling trend: participants would often revert to their old habits about a month after completing our in-person training.

We wanted to address this issue head-on. We realized that while knowledge is essential, it can only take you so far. The real challenge lies in bridging the gap between knowledge and action. This realization led us to focus on the fundamentals of training itself, which is distinct from mere knowledge acquisition.

We had to redefine training from the perspective that it was not just a class or a learning session, but rather a daily commitment to action, discipline, and consistency.

Training is the “State” of being trained. It involves a systematic and dedicated mental and physical process of acquiring, developing, and refining skills, knowledge, and abilities through instruction, disciplined practice, and experience. This process is aimed at improving performance and eventually achieving mastery within a specific discipline.

To tackle this challenge, I developed the "What Even Is Training" module as part of our Launchpad360 sales training program. This module is designed to help individuals cross the bridge between knowing what they should do and actually doing it.

Defining Training

Training is more than just a series of activities or sessions. It is the “State” of being trained.

Here's how we defined it during our course:

"The systematic and dedicated mental and physical process of acquiring, developing, and refining skills, knowledge, and abilities through instruction, disciplined practice, and experience, in pursuit of improved performance, and eventually mastery, within a specific discipline."

Training focuses on specific objectives, which can produce immediate and measurable results.

The Role of Discipline in Training

One of the key takeaways from our session was the importance of discipline. As I often say, "Bad sales & anxiety come from not doing what you know." Discipline is the cornerstone of effective training. It’s not about waiting for motivation, which is unreliable and fleeting. Instead, it’s about consistent action. My personal mantra is: "Do the thing, the work, regardless of what you think or how you feel!"

Grit and Growth Mindset

We also discussed the concept of grit, which is essentially a combination of passion and perseverance. Grit equals mindset. To develop a growth mindset, you must act your way into disciplined action, not just think your way into it. This means embracing challenges, persisting through setbacks, and continuously striving to improve.

Self-Awareness and Continuous Improvement

Self-awareness is crucial in training. As the famous quote goes, "To thine own self be true." During our course, we conducted a sales self-assessment test, allowing attendees to identify their strengths and weaknesses. This self-awareness is the first step towards targeted training and improvement.

Learning from the Best

We looked at the example of Tom Brady, arguably the greatest quarterback of all time. Despite his unparalleled success, Brady always had a trainer. He understood that to stay at the top, he needed someone with the expertise to push him further. This humility and willingness to learn from others is a powerful lesson for all of us.

5 Steps to Reframe Training and Achieve a Growth Mindset

  1. Define Clear Objectives: Know what you want to achieve with your training.
  2. Embrace Discipline: Commit to consistent practice and improvement.
  3. Develop Self-Awareness: Understand your strengths and areas for growth.
  4. Seek Expert Guidance: Learn from those who can push you beyond your limits.
  5. Act, Don’t Wait for Motivation: Take action regardless of how you feel.
