What Gets in the Way of Achieving Your Goals, Issue #144

Most of us want something in our lives to be different. It’s human nature. Maybe we want to buy a home, make a change in our lifestyle, be in a relationship, or start our own business.

It’s exciting to think about these big goals, imagining how life will be different once they are achieved. It can also be scary and uncomfortable to think about the changes that we’ll need to make to get the results we’re looking for.

The very nature of a goal is to challenge us. It’s important to realize that when we succeed, we will have changed. It’s impossible to maintain our old behaviors and attitudes and achieve something new at the same time.

And because we don’t readily embrace this, there can be a lot of starts and stops before it seems like there’s any traction. When this happens, it’s easy to get discouraged and give up.

If you’re wondering if this is you, I want you to listen to how you speak about your goals to see if you are using phrases that begin with:

I always…

I never…

I’m just…

I struggle with…

Because if you are, I guarantee that while you think that you’re simply stating a fact, what you are doing is making a case for why the change can’t take place. You’re focusing on why it can’t happen instead of looking for ways to make it happen.

Here are some examples of how to turn your way of thinking around:

  • Before: I don’t want to tell people about my business.
  • After: I’m going to tell people about my business; what are some ways that I can do that?
  • Before: There are no networking events around my home, so I’ll never get my business off the ground.
  • After: Lucky for me, there are networking events online. Let me use Google to find them.
  • Before: I struggle with imposter syndrome, it’s just the way it is.
  • After: What can I do to build my confidence?

Making this shift in your thought process can take time, but with practice, you’ll stop reinforcing what’s in the way and search for the solution instead.  You’ve got this.

I think reframing negative thoughts should be taught in school! Being able to easily turn your thinking around is invaluable.
