What have I learned from the great John Wooden?

Who is someone you have learned life lessons from?

As many of you know, I am an avid reader.  Reading allows me to grow, learn, and develop my skills as a person.  Someone whom I have looked up to my entire life is John Wooden.  While he has many great books, I recently reread “Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court.”  In the #CJJblog this week, I give you my main takeaways from this brilliant read.  Enjoy.

  • Success.  Wooden is famous for creating his Pyramid of Success, but how does he define success?  “The peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best that you are capable of being.”Cornerstones.  What are your cornerstones to success?  Industriousness is having great work ethic and enthusiasm.  Competitive greatness is being at your best when your best is needed.Pyramid Mortars.  Holds the pyramid together.  Built from patience and faith.Leadership.  Coach Wooden defines leadership as “The ability to get others to work together for the common good, and the best possible results, while letting them know they did it themselves.”Fairness.  Giving all people the treatment they earn and deserve.Leaders.  Walk the walk and lead by example
  • Wooden Maxims – My favorite onesHappiness begins where selfishness ends. The best way to improve your team is to improve yourself.Discipline yourself, so that others won’t need to.Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there. The smallest good deed is better than the best intentions. The best thing a father can do for their children is to love their mother.Love is the greatest of all words in our language.

Did You Know?  Coach wrote a blog article on Carlos Alcaraz becoming the next king in Men’s Tennis a couple weeks ago, only to have Novak Djokovic defeat him in straight sets for the Gold Medal at the Olympics in Paris… Maybe Alcaraz isn’t quite ready to take the throne just yet!

Life Tip #36:  What is the biggest room in the world?  The room for improvement.
