Business Model Canvas: Are you asking the right questions?

“Ultimately, customers are the only relevant judges of your business model.”

Every business model has a product or service that focuses on a ‘customer’s job to be done’ (Value proposition). According to him you start by asking how well your ‘Value Proposition’ is getting your target customer’s job done? Also ask how critical is this job which will eventually indicate if there will be a budget to solve it.

Our Planet : The future is now.

An Inconvenient Truth was released in 2006, nearly 13 years ago. It seems the world has learnt very little with leaders of the free world extolling ‘fake facts’ to deny climate change and the reality that it staring at us.

David Attenborough has provided voice to the Alastair Fothergill, Keith Scholey, Colin Butfield (producers of Planet Earth) produced Our Planet, a 8 part series for Netflix, that was released on 5th April (2 days back). The message is clear and simple. We are actually living on borrowed time. While there has been some successes - like that of the humpback whales or regeneration of life around Chernobyl - the core message is - we have ravaged our planet with utter disdain for the future.

Guess what, the future is now!

Who was Carlo Scarpa?

The strangest place to find out about a modernist artist is an article on WeWork and its spaces. I was surprised that it referred and then introduced me to the wonderful world of Carlo Scarpa.

One of the least known amongst his contemporaries, Scarpa worked mostly in and around Venice - a city with mostly traditional outlook unlike say Milan which was more ‘avant-garde’. He was .... ‘understated, meticulously gracious and profoundly well read ( his large library was always open to his friends), he wasn’t one to worry about his legacy or the enduring purity of his creations.

It not breakthrough tech, it is breakthrough business models that will create the real winners of tomorrow.

At the current churn rate 50% of the S&P 500 will cease to exist over the next 50 years. The Gartner Hype Cycle is a good indicator of the probable Crash and burns.

On the flip side though there are opportunities for new companies to emerge and grow. At the core however will be business models and not only breakthrough technology.

So where are the opportunities : 1. Making goods and services available to those who didn’t have access to them and 2. replace resource intensive products and services with ones that are radically more efficient.

Have you built your personal culture wall?

According to Benjamin Hardy, to make progress and deliver transformational outcomes for yourself you need to be intentional about your own values and beliefs. Very few proactively design their environment. Hardy quotes Dr. Marshall Goldsmith which neatly sums up his views - “ if you do not create and control your environment, your environment creates and controls you.”

Churn is one key metric SAAS founders need to become friends with. This is one number that could make or break the service - specially if you are acquiring customers using VC money. Anything above 5-7% annual churn can be deadly. And if you could manage a negative churn of as little as 2.5% - your valuation can be up by over 20%. Your call!

Happiness and Money

Abigail Disney, 59, is the grand daughter of Roy O Disney, Co founder of The Walt Disney Company. Coming from an upper middle class family which became super rich after Michael Eisner grew the stock price over 50 times. And that’s when “ …all of the sudden, we went from being comfortable, upper-middle-class people to suddenly my dad had a private jet. That’s when I feel that my dad really lost his way in life. And that’s why I feel hyperconscious about what wealth does to people. I lived in one family as a child, and then I didn’t even recognize the family as I got older.”

AI is here. And it's in your pocket. Turing Award 2018 goes to Hinton, LeCun and Bengio.

The belief and disbelief about AI and machines being able to mimic the brain has been on for a long time. Geoffrey Hinton, born to a family of famous mathematicians and economists have believed that multilayered neural network is possible to build and could solve major problems. He was influenced by Frank Rosenblatt who in the late 1950’s developed 'Perceptron' a neural network computing system that will mimic the brain. Rosenblatt was hoping to feed data - like pictures of men and women and the computer will eventually be able to tell them apart. Only problem - it couldn't.

Geoffrey was firm in his belief and worked through prolonged period if ‘AI Winters’ - a decade at a time when funding dried up along with public interest. Using the work Hinton did, Dean Pomerleau built a self driving car in the late 80s that drove on public roads. Yann LeCun developed a system that could recognize hand written digits.

“Honesty is a very expensive gift; just don't expect it from cheap people.” Warren Buffet on Feedback

WePresent is the content play of WeTransfer and has some great articles primarily targeted at creative folks. A recent piece on Feedback under an ongoing series ‘Stuff they don’t tell you’ makes a lot of sense for all of us. At a personal level we are never trained to take feedback with an open mind and humility. We also are mostly not graceful while giving feedback either - unlike what we want when receiving them.

For a long time, meat which is 30% of global source of protein, has begun to raise the concern of sustainability. The world population slated to touch 9.6B by 2050 drives the sift towards a meatless future, which some estimates could cost the global economy 1.6 Trillion by then.

Running with the Machines

General Purpose technologies drive most economic growth. Each of the major general purpose technology era’s till date ( Steam Engine / Electricity ) took several decades before they impacted work process and productivity. Our era has its own general purpose technology - the computer ushering in what Erik Brynjolfsson calls - The New Machine Age (in May 11 1997 Kasaparov lost to Deep Blue marking the beginning of the era). The new age is digital, exponential and combinatorial. Together with Machine Learning, they will usher in unprecedented growth in productivity over the next 100 years.

$100 invested in Nike (IPO:1980) is now $6.07M, while in Alphabet (Google; IPO:2004) it is $2.6K

$100 in Walmart IPO in 1957 is now $1.24M while in Amazon (IPO:1997) it is worth $120.6K. In both cases the time period is obviously not similar. $100 invested in Apple (IPO:2002) is currently $43.4K. So what is the point? First, Tech companies are historically not the best Return on Investments (at IPO for retail investors, VC’s typically would have taken their share out during the IPO itself).

Much beyond the phase of family choices, the difference between similarly qualified candidates will see an accelerating gap from age 30 - 40, reaching as much as 25% . Disruptive innovations can start out serving low end low performance low cost markets but not being pursued by large companies - like social marketing, marketing automation, mobile first apps etc. and continue into specific interest areas like Security, Compliance, Document & Contract management. Offer them as a feature sets that legacy systems cannot offer - like 'made for' remote teams and millennials in the workforce.

Jeffrey P. Bezo’s letter to Amazon shareholders clocked its 20th this year. A much anticipated annual ritual, it is led with thoughts, that I presume, are top of his mind. Over the years it has ranged from philosophical, to strategic, to tactical. Today it was my source of learning about “high standards” in everything. The four elements of High Standards as Jeff sees them, are: “...they are teachable, they are domain specific, you must recognize them, and you must explicitly coach realistic scope.”
