What Is Life & Performance Coaching?

What Is Life & Performance Coaching?

In early 2020, I left my career in cybersecurity sales to do some healing and really deep personal development work. That is when I was introduced to the coaching industry. Before that, I only knew about sales coaches and trainers, not personal development coaches. It was a game changer for my life here's how partnering with a coach can be extremely beneficial in your life!

Let's first start to answer this question:

So what is a coach and why can it be beneficial for you to partner with one?

Former Amy, who had a pretty decent-sized sales ego heard the word "coaching" and thought, "Oh this is for people that just need performance improvement and they are failing so they are being 'coached' out of an organization". Do you hear the word coaching and think that it's for underperformers? I certainly did, wow was I naive!!

Now that I'm three years into my entrepreneurial journey and have completely eliminated self-limiting behaviors and thoughts, I can tell you that coaching is for individuals that want to step out of denial and into the next level of greatness in their life. Actually, the HIGHEST level of performers, corporate leaders, and entrepreneurs invest tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars into masterminds and coaching programs each year!

You may be asking yourself,

"But Amy, I'm already a high-achiever, why would I ever want to dedicate my time and money with a coach?"

Here is my experience and I'll you make the determination if coaching is something right for you:

  • If you are someone who doesn't want to settle in life and you desire continued growth and an objective third-party perspective to show you your blind spots, partnering with a coach is for you.
  • You're willing to learn and are coachable! This is huge. If you're an individual that is ok with staying where you are and not hungry to dig deep into high performance then partnering with a coach is not for you. I turn potential clients away all of the time if they are truly not ready to break through and looking for someone to feed into their victim story.
  • Experience is everything! I've hired coaches that may have had a cool program or sounded great at the beginning but when I started to work with them, completely not relatable in life or business. In my opinion, it's super important that your coach knows what you may be currently going through. If they don't they may not be able to really help you create the results you're desiring. Real-life experience vs. a slick sales pitch and trendy program name or methodology is extremely important.

Ask your potential coach or advisor: This is what I'm currently going through, how did you overcome X,Y,Z. If they don't have experience, move onto finding a different individual that aligns with your needs.

  • You see value in investing in yourself, even when you are going through a breakdown in life. When my clients are experiencing a breakdown in life, we celebrate it! Why? Because you get to BREAKTHROUGH! God gives us these moments to highlight something that isn't working and if we take action we bust through it.

What is the difference between coaching and therapy?

I definitely feel like a therapist some days but here is the biggest difference! Therapy is certainly valuable for people, I've done it but I didn't see breakthrough results because therapy teaches you to change a thought vs. processing human emotion and leading behavior modification. In breakthrough coaching, we find clarity in these areas, we appreciate the past for what it is, the past, and we move forward in rewiring the brain for a growth mindset. This is an area of life where there is always another level to develop, even with the highest performers! We get to the root causes underneath all of the surface-level areas of life, career, and relationships to create the desired experience and soul-level alignment.

Example: Susie comes to me stating that she seems to burn out of her sales job about every 18 months. She performs well at one job and then kind of fizzles at the next. She has won awards but seems to be riding a roller coaster. She's tired and wants to figure it out once and for all.

  • Susie and I would dig deep into the inconsistencies throughout her life, sources of anxiety, and chronic stress. She would become aware of where this cycle began in her life and the behaviors that have resulted in her programming. We get out of the brain and into her heart of what she really wants in life so that she can start to eliminate people pleasing, regain control of her energy each day, and start to heighten her level of consciousness. We would work on a program that will break her through these patterns that she may not even be aware of yet to transform her life, health, income, and relationships.
  • You know something in your life isn't working and you're ready to let go of the past, let go of the comfort zone and grow! Life is now and we are not guaranteed tomorrow. We are guaranteed this very moment to live with joy, and connection, free from stress-related health ailments, free from fear and anxiety.

If you're not feeling in alignment in your career or in your personal life, it may be time for you to look for a coach. Some people try to put bandaids on their discomfort, and their DIS-EASE like denial, job hopping, meditation, working out, taking a pill, drinking, eating, etc. While things like going to the gym and meditation are awesome, it's not treating the underlying cause of chronic stress. What you resist in life will persist!
