What Mark Twain’s Cat Can Teach Us About Business Strategy

What Mark Twain’s Cat Can Teach Us About Business Strategy

Lesson #1: Sometimes, our curiosity leads us to hot stoves—painful but enlightening experiences. We learn quickly not to repeat the same mistakes, much like Tom and the hot stove.

Once upon a time, in a cozy kitchen, lived a curious cat named Tom. Tom, always on the hunt for a warm nap spot, spotted the stove—perfect, right? Wrong.

This stove was hotter than a jalapeño on a summer day. With all the grace of a feline ninja, Tom leaped onto it, and... YOWZA!

Tom shot off the stove faster than a kid avoiding broccoli at dinner.

The screech echoed through the house, and Mark Twain himself couldn’t help but chuckle at the furry rocket that had just launched across the room.

But here’s where it gets interesting. Tom, being the smart (and slightly traumatized) cat he was, decided that all stoves were evil. Hot, cold, in-between—didn’t matter.

Tom wouldn’t touch them with a ten-foot pole. Winter came, and while all the other cats were toasting their paws on the warm (cold) stove, Tom was shivering in a corner, missing out on the simple joys of life.

Lesson #2: Don’t let one bad experience scare you away from all future opportunities. Just because one stove was hot doesn’t mean they all are. In the world of business, this is crucial. One failed strategy doesn’t mean all strategies are doomed. Be discerning, not fearful.

Now, let’s tie this into our coaching & agency world. Imagine your clients are like Tom—bright, curious, but maybe a bit scarred from past failures. They’ve jumped onto a few hot stoves in their time and are now avoiding all stoves altogether. As their service provider, it’s your job to help them see that not all stoves are created equal.

Lesson #3: Guide your clients to understand their experiences deeply, extracting wisdom without fear. Help them find the ‘cold stoves’—the opportunities that are actually beneficial, even if they seem risky at first glance.

In the end, Tom eventually learned (with a little coaxing) that the stove wasn’t always hot. He found his warm spot and purred contentedly, all thanks to a bit of bravery and a lot of wisdom.

So, dear coach & agency owner, let’s help our clients find their warm spots in the business world. Let’s guide them past their fears and into the cozy success they deserve.

And remember, not every stove is a hot stove—some are just waiting to provide a little warmth and a lot of comfort.
