What is Standing in Your Way?
Have you ever found yourself knowing the right thing to do but still making choices that don’t align with your values? Why do we often struggle with behaviors that contradict what we truly believe? The answer lies in the power of limiting beliefs.
The Influence of Belief on Behavior
Our beliefs shape our behaviors, affecting every decision we make. From a physiological standpoint, our brains are wired to function based on the inputs we receive. These inputs, whether positive or negative, form neural pathways that guide our actions. When we consistently take in limiting or negative beliefs, these pathways become well-trodden, leading us to repeat the same behaviors, even when we know better.
Psychologically, limiting beliefs stem from cognitive distortions—patterns of thinking that distort our perception of reality. For instance, if you believe you’re not good enough, you might shy away from opportunities, even though you have the skills to succeed. These beliefs are deeply ingrained, shaping how we view ourselves and our potential.
The Biblical Perspective: The Battle Within
The Bible provides a profound insight into this struggle. Proverbs 23:7 tells us, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.” What we believe in our hearts governs our lives. Yet, as Paul describes in Romans 7:15-20, there’s an internal battle between knowing what’s right and still choosing wrongly. This tension exists because of our sinful nature, which is at odds with the Spirit.
To align our values with our behavior, we must first acknowledge the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 12:2 urges us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This renewal is crucial for breaking free from the world’s patterns of thinking and aligning our actions with God’s truth.
The World’s Patterns vs. Freedom in Christ
The world often promotes values like self-reliance, instant gratification, and success at any cost. These values are in direct opposition to Christ’s teachings, which call us to die to ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him (Matthew 16:24).
In a stimulus-driven world, where we’re constantly reacting to external pressures and desires, it’s easy to make impulsive decisions. However, true freedom comes when we recognize that between the stimulus and our response lies the freedom to choose. The Holy Spirit empowers us to make choices that align with God’s will, rather than being enslaved to the world’s patterns.
"True freedom is found in the surrender of our will to God’s perfect plan."
Crucifying the Flesh: The Path to Freedom
Aligning our values with our behavior requires us to crucify the flesh and break free from sinful patterns. Galatians 5:24 says, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” This crucifixion isn’t a one-time event; it’s a daily surrender to God’s will.
Knowing Jesus more deeply is the foundation of all real and sustainable growth. As we immerse ourselves in His Word, prayer, and fellowship with other believers, the Holy Spirit works within us, transforming our hearts and minds. The more we know Him, the more we are transformed into His likeness, making it easier to choose rightly, even instinctively.
Choosing Rightly: Living a Life of Surrender
Reaching the point where we instinctively make the right choices comes from a life of surrender. Romans 6:13 encourages us, “Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life.” When we surrender our will to God’s perfect instructions, we experience true freedom.
This freedom allows us to choose rightly, responding to life’s stimuli in ways that glorify God and align with His truth. It’s the freedom to live a life that reflects our deepest values, grounded in the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ.
Reflection Questions:
A Prayer for Transformation
Lord Jesus, I often struggle with limiting beliefs that keep me from living the life You have called me to. Help me renew my mind with Your truth and crucify the sinful patterns that lead me astray. Holy Spirit, transform my heart and mind so that my behavior aligns with my values, reflecting Your love and truth. Guide me to choose rightly, instinctively, as I grow in my relationship with You.
