Why is communication so important for engineers?

As someone with a background in engineering and a master’s in communication, I see the tremendous value of communication for engineers and technical professionals. Our ability to externalize our ideas could drive us forward, or it could limit our ability to reach our potential. If we cannot reach our audience, our concepts and plans will fall flat. If we want to bring others on board with our way of thinking, we must leverage the power of effective communication.

You can have the greatest ideas in the world, but they usually aren’t much good to your company or your career if you can’t express them clearly and persuasively... In fields such as engineering or finance, you often need to share complex ideas with executives, customers, and colleagues, and your ability to connect with people outside your field can be as important as your technical expertise (Bovee and Thill, 2021, p. 4).

Don’t just take my word for it. IEEE, ASHRAE, ASME, and many other professional organizations have written on the importance of communication. In this IEEE article, the author trumpets the importance of public speaking, documentation, and speaking with authority. Their main premise is that “Being able to share ideas with others is an important quality in a leader.” They also highlight that engineers with strong communication skills are better candidates for promotion than their peers.

ASME writes that engineers should be able to communicate with technical and non-technical colleagues. The author quotes Zachary Koppelman, from Purdue, who highlights that, “Engineers work with complex processes and extremely detailed data,” and, “Being a great engineer is more than being able to individually understand the processes and data; it is also being able to explain the processes and data in a matter that allows audiences to understand their importance.” This quote speaks to the true nature of communication for engineers. Without strong communication, our technical ideas won’t be able to reach our audience.

ASHRAE has a different perspective on communication. This article speaks to the importance of communication in high-performance building design. The author tells a story about a check valve gone wrong. Through this experience, the engineer on the project has several tips about effective project communication:

  1. Involve more team members earlier in the design process.
  2. Bring the maintenance team and other stakeholders into the design phase.
  3. Build relationships in person.

Each of these tips will improve design coordination because the team will be able to communicate with each other more effectively.

Even AI recognizes the value of communication for engineers. According to ChatGPT, communication skills are essential for engineers to collaborate effectively, solve complex problems, build relationships, present their work convincingly, document comprehensively, negotiate, and manage risk.

As this is such a critical topic, I will follow this post up with a communication for engineers series of posts. I plan to touch on communication basics, communicating through the design process and communicating our value proposition. By the end of this series, I hope you become a better communicator.
