Why I made 7 new covers for my book Billy No Mates
In early July 2022, my book Billy No Mates was published. It's a funny, honest and carefully researched hybrid of memoir and non-fiction all about men's friendship problem and what they can do about it. It's gone well, thanks for asking. Better than I dreamed, actually. Yet since it has come out I keep coming up against similar feedback from would-be-readers or gift-givers.
Women often say to me: 'I want to give a copy to be husband/brother/dad but I worry the title Billy No Mates feels like a dig!'
Men mewl: 'Yeah, might get it on audio book but I feel a bit uncomfortable reading a book called that in public.'
Not everyone is put off, but I hear these sentiments frequently enough to see a pattern. This feedback speaks to the stigma around loneliness, and how confessing it challenges many norms of old-school masculinity - ironically, the very norms that can get in the way of close friendships for men in the first place.
For what it's worth: I love the title. But, partially because I thought it might be fun, and partly because I want to give reluctant guys an alternative, I have designed 7 new covers for my book. I asked myself, 'What sort of cover would a bloke be happy to be seen reading on their morning commute?'
The resulting covers are all available for printing, so that you can slip one over the top of the real thing. Send me a message if you'd like the file, or simply browse for your favourite below.

So there we have it: seven alternative book covers. Perhaps I might consider writing them for real in the future? Who knows. Think I might be out of my depth on the orgasm one, to be honest.
The real book cover - indeed the real contents - of Billy No Mates is available to buy in hardback, e-book and audio book now. And yes, I read the audio book myself.
