Why I Took Sophia Amoruso's Business Class, What I learned, and Why You Should Take Business Class
In the Spring of 2021, I kept seeing this beautiful and glamorous young woman, Sophia Amoruso, on Instagram and Facebook promoting her upcoming Business Class. I was intrigued. In part, because Sophia's branding incorporates a lot of 70s-style airplane branding, which resonated with me because I have worked for two airlines (but not in the 1970s!)
I hung up my shingle as a solopreneur in May 2019. But I still didn't have a website or a professional email. I had fifteen years of international legal experience, had weathered some pretty tricky situations in Bahrain and Qatar, and handled some very high-value contracts alone and competently. But I didn't really have a handle on what it took to build a start-up law firm.
Enter Sophia Amoruso's Business Class.
I signed up for a free workshop with Sophia and I loved her delivery style, her success story as a serial entrepreneur (think Nasty Gal), author, and all-around Wunderkind. (think Nasty Gal). I could relate to Sophia's youth, humility, scrappiness, and sense of fun and humor. By the end of the free workshop, I signed up for Business Class. I was nervous and excited because, as I was bootstrapping, it was a cost (US$1999) that I had not factored into my budget. Luckily, there was an option to pay US$199 over twelve months. There is also a scholarship but I did not apply for that.
As a perennial student, I have done my fair share of coursework and handled enough new material to be able to assess the quality and value of course content pretty quickly. My initial assessment was that the modules and corresponding worksheets (a joining gift with Business Class is a beautiful sky blue binder that comes in a red satin pouch). The worksheets are practical and provide easy and not-so-easy steps (because building a business is not easy, who are we kidding?) that focus your mind on what your business is about, who your competitors are, and what your ideal client looks like.
Beyond the academics, there is a Lounge - a private club with lifetime access for Business Class students. This is where the real action happens - because it is in The Lounge where all the past interviews with entrepreneurial rock stars live, where you can interact with Sophia and other Business Class crew members. You can build real relationships here and learn from others who are in the same entrepreneurial boat as you. It is very reassuring and inspiring. It is a platform that is ever-evolving, there are masses of information and that volume continues to increase, and Sophia's mother, Dena Kouremetis, offers very useful copyrighting workshops and is very generous with her time and assistance.
Having been in the program for two years, I am honored and humbled to be a Business Class Ambassador.
What I learned from Business Class, Sophia, Dena, and the Business Class crew is priceless:
