Why the Inside-Out Perspective Matters

“The divine self is the author of our life story, but without sufficient spiritual awareness the human self tends to rearrange the plot.”
~Anthon St. Maarten

Why does the inside-out perspective matter?

We arrive into this world observing everything, without any preconceived notions of how life “should” be. In our early development, we live entirely in the present moment. We laugh, we cry, we observe life, and in an instant, we move from one moment to the other, effortlessly and with a pervasive sense of awe and wonder.

It does not take too long, before we begin to become socially conditioned to the notions, beliefs, and ideas of others. This conditioning often leads us to embrace beliefs and ideas that contradict the natural state of the mortal and spiritual worlds. This is when we begin to doubt ourselves and experience unhappiness.

For example, one may become conditioned to not believe in the principles of gravity, electricity, or magnetism. Nonetheless, they govern the universe (at least the universe that we have discovered so far), whether we believe they do or not. Beliefs do not have the power to alter the principles of the mortal and spiritual worlds and how they effect everyone equally.  The inside-out perspective is our natural state.

Little by little, as we begin to believe that external circumstances, beliefs, and conditions, determine our moods, our happiness, and our wellbeing, the search for “something” to help us feel better begins. This “outside-in” perspective of life is a rollercoaster ride of madness and unhappiness. It can lead to substance abuse, addictions of all types, mental instability, fractured relationships, and so much more misery.

In reality, the essence or formless spirit that animates our human form, is not of this mortal world. We arrive in the mortal world, with all that we need hardwired within us, that allows us to be happy and receive internal guidance for our individual lives, based on the circumstances that appear moment by moment, in our surroundings.

Thoughts are merely conditioned human mind activity, that are designed to preserve one’s mortal life. They often have no meaning whatsoever, other than a triggered response from memories or prior situations. It is when our spiritual self innocently attaches meaning or gives importance to the brain activity, that things can go wrong.

Conducting your life from an inside-out perspective means conducting your life from the realization that thoughts are constantly generated from human brain activity based on external circumstances and triggers, in real time or from memory. Their function is to preserve your human form, not to direct your spiritual essence. (Read that again and ponder it for a moment). Thoughts are not who we are.

Thoughts also create automatic feelings, another design of the human form to preserve life. If you are feeling unsettled, anxious, irritated, angry, or ill at ease, it is time to not trust your thinking in that moment, or to make decisions that will have lasting consequences while your mood is low and agitated from those thoughts.

Latching onto a thought that is causing anxious or agitated feelings of uncertainty or “what if” scenarios, gives that thought even more energy, with new thoughts generated to try to figure out meaning from something that is usually completely made up in the mind. That is how the brain functions.

When you have a calm mind, are feeling at ease, and not distracted by activity, insights will always come. The key is to make time daily for soothing activities (or better still the absence of activity) that create conditions that are calming, which allows insights to rise up from within you.

The inside-out perspective matters, because it is the way we are designed to optimally manuever in the mortal world. As an experiment, take a moment to observe infants and toddlers. They live entirely in the present. As adults, we are often drawn to their innocence. I know I am. Even when children are born into difficult external circumstances, as young children they enjoy the world around them, in whatever form that is.

When we maintain the view that external circumstances, people, places, and things have the absolute power to create our happiness, our life will be unsettled, chaotic, subject to the will and whims of others, ultimately leading to significant suffering.

People do face difficult life circumstances; there is no disputing that. Everyone faces challenges during their lifetime. The inside-out perspective creates greater ease and wellbeing in how those challenges effect us internally, which is what matters the most. The inside-out perspective makes all the difference in the quality of one’s life.
