Why would I want to be in the @ITV programme FastFix: Diabetes?

The @ITV show FastFix: Diabetes airs on Wednesday / Thursday from 9 – 10pm. It’s all part of ITV's Feel Good campaign and #DiabetesAwarenessWeek. And I am on it! With trailers being aired in prime time as we speak. Here's the press release.

But why would I want to take part in the programme?

Surely this is a BIG departure away from digital marketing and tech expert / consultant. And isn’t it a bit dangerous for my brand. So to speak. As I have no control over how I will look on the programme.

There are several reasons WHY and one BIG conclusion…

  • As I was diagnosed with Type2Diabetes in November. As the doctors realised I was suffering with the condition whilst looking for the cause of something else.
  • As I wrote a blog about being diagnosed. And about how positive I was planning to be - and how I read (online) that you could reverse it with diet and exercise. And how the condition wasn’t just for the very overweight.
  • As I had a strong social network. Which I guess is why it was picked up by the researchers so quickly. Much of that power came from LinkedIn - so thanks everyone.
  • As I had the support of my family. As they knew that I was getting more and more ill and knew that I had to do something about it. However, as I am finding not everyone who has the condition is so lucky.
  • As I got to meet some amazing people. Not only Anita Rani but also GP and obesity expert Dr Zoe Williams and Professor Jason Gill. Who are at the forefront of research into how diet and exercise can prevent #Type2Diabetes.
  • As I knew I had to place health before wealth. As the treatment is not a cheap or a quick one. It is not a magic bullet. But I had to protect one of the most important assets for my business.

Myself and my brain.

As I am a self-employed marketing trainer and consultant with my own company: Great Marketing Works. So this last point is the BIG one. I must protect my main asset. My knowledge and brain power. It might be the same for you too?

It's the same for anyone who is a knowledge work, or who runs or owns a business. Especially one that’s classed as a SME or small business. And that is MOST business in the UK. As small businesses accounted for 99.3% of all private sector businesses. And 99.9% were small or medium-sized (SMEs).

So what? Because in a small business – the boss needs their brains. And Type2Diabetes and the related high blood sugar plays havoc with your smarts.

Type2Diabetes and YOUR brain.

Type 2 Diabetes can increase the risk of developing long-term memory problems. High blood glucose levels, over a number of years damage the nerves. Including those of the brain, which can increase the risk of dementia.

That type 2 diabetes can affect memory, learning, and concentration makes sense. According to computational cognitive neuroscientist Dae-Jin Kim of the Indiana University Bloomington.

“Our brain consumes about 25 percent of the blood in our body. So, the glucose in our blood should affect our brain the most.”

Type2Diabetes also messes with insulin which is crucial for cognitive abilities. As when blood glucose levels are high, insulin has trouble getting into the brain. The molecules that transport it across the “blood-brain barrier”. Are affected by high sugars. This is called “CNS insulin resistance.” William Klein, PhD, professor of neurology at Northwestern University, says that:

“Insulin seems to play a role in learning and memory.”

If insulin can’t do its job in the brain, learning and memory are compromised. This process can lead to Alzheimer disease according to Erika Gebel, PhD.

Should we worry? Yes…

As a different study published in the journal Neurology. Shows that people with Type 2 diabetes demonstrate a decline in cognitive skills and ability to perform daily activities in just two years.

So you could have Type2Diabetes and if not reversed you could be loosing your business asset and yourself in less than 3 years! Which is not long for succession planning… And to add to this. The clock so to speak could already be ticking…

As you could have Type 2 without realising it.

As there are an estimated 850,000 cases of un-diagnosed cases of Type 2 diabetes in the UK. Which is means around one person in every 74 has an un-diagnosed case of the condition. Which means that most people will have a friend or family member who has the condition but does not know it. And to this you can add the 100,000 to 150,000 people who get diagnosed every year.

How many of them run a business or are self employed I wonder?

So your boss could have it. Or you could have it. And it is likely that a LOT of business owners have it. As the issues with Type2Diabetes link to:

- overworking,

- not sleeping enough,

- too much drinking

- and not looking after yourself.

Sound familiar? Sounds like a lot of entrepreneurial people I know..

Take it from someone who knows…

You don’t want to have Type2Diabetes. So get yourself tested. Make sure you don’t have it. And if you do have it. And you run your own business. Make it your business to reverse it and quickly.

You literally might not be thinking about the damage you are doing!

So why am I on the programme?

Why do something so extreme? Maybe it’s my personality? Maybe I am a risk taker. Maybe it was for selfish reasons. Maybe I was scared to lose my favourite part of me. And my welfare...Just know that I wanted to reverse my condition. And for slightly more altruistic reasons too. As presenter Anita Rani says

“Type 2 diabetes is a national crisis and a massive challenge to the NHS. But this experiment proves that there is real hope of turning the clock back and reversing Type 2. Using this revolutionary diet to stop this epidemic in its tracks.”

So that’s why I am on Fast Fix: Diabetes on Wednesday and Thursday night this week.

Tune in to find out whether it’s possible for all five of us to reverse Type 2 Diabetes. It’s on from 9 – 10pm. And it you know someone you think might have Type2Diabetes (the symptoms are here) or that has it already.

Then get them to sign up at www.BeFreeOfType2D.co.uk.

Which is a non for profit that plans to help professional people reverse their Type2Diabetes. I should know - I set it up :)
