Why YOU Need a Career Coach, and What to Look For
Professionals who use coaches consistently outperform their peers.
There’s a reason why athletes succeed and improve faster with the help of their coaches. Advance faster in your career by joining the growing community of successful professionals who have invested in a career coach.
But how?
Finding the right career coach isn’t always a task you want to face when you’re stuck with a frustrating career dilemma. You simply don’t have the time to research who in your network knows a legitimate career coach, what their specialties are and if they are affordable based on your paycheck.
And I’ll say it now – most career coaches will make you pay what you may think is a rather hefty amount. If they don’t, here’s my first piece of advice: Look elsewhere.
Those who know how to coach, also know how much to charge for it, and you will soon see why that advice carries a significant return on your investment.
Should that discourage you? Maybe. It is up to you to figure out your personal career ROI. My suggestion: Waste no time and look for the experts. But do it right. Hire a career coach who spends time getting to know you, your industry, your personal goals and long-term ambitions.
Why? You simply won’t get this level of advice from your superiors at work and certainly not from your friends and family; finding that ideal job has many hurdles, and it can be a bit of a long race, and you shouldn’t rely on those not qualified to give you that expert advice.
Fortunately, most career coaches know how to jump over these hurdles with ease, using successful strategies that they have developed themselves or emulate from others over the years.
They have expertise in showing you how to promote yourself, develop networking skills and fast-tracking your professional development.
They’ve seen your situation before – and know how to coach you through it.
They are the singular most qualified person that will give you honest and necessary advice. Their success rides on it, as well as yours, as you are both invested in the journey and most importantly, the result.
When professionals like you seek my advice, it’s usually because you’ve either been laid off, are looking for a new career direction or are at a growth standstill in your current position.
As a career strategist, I provide a wide array of advice, networking tips and emotional support that can get you to where you want to be in your current or future job.
My biggest differentiation from the typical career coach is my long career as an executive recruiter, arming me with the knowledge of what gets people hired, and the strategies needed to gain the favor of the hiring managers and be the one who gets the offer for your dream job.
It is my firm belief that everyone should wake up on Monday mornings looking forward to doing the work they are doing, and you certainly deserve that. For the past 25 years, I’ve been doing this successfully, and best of all, I truly love my job.
Make sure you request an initial consultation with a prospective career coach, even if just for a few minutes, so that you can get a feel for how they will guide you through the job search process.
I always set the stage for my methodology in that first chat, and I make sure to inject a fair amount of humor and real-life stories, as I have found that creating a slightly lighter environment always yields more successful results.
If you’re interested in working with me, I need to truly understand how deeply committed you are to landing that ideal job and the hurdles you are willing to jump over to reach success, and I insist that you are always up front with me. I don’t just coach anybody – I want someone who is as passionate about finding your next great job and career as I am.
Finding genuine, interested, and focused career coaches can be difficult, I’ll admit.*
I did a search recently for information on career coaches, and it left me with a headache.
Sign up for this or that, receive my whitepaper on whatever, “wait don’t go” pop-ups, fill out this form – you know the drill. The online coaching community is littered with people that want to make it difficult for you. Making it impersonal, programmed, and hard to commit to.
If this is what you’re finding out there and you’re signing up for it, you’re not going to be getting the ROI you’re looking for. You will be disappointed. Keep searching, making sure to look for someone who seems approachable.
For the business professionals and athletes who I coach, a simple email to me is all I require to get the ball rolling. I’ll read through it and get back to you within a day or so, and you’ll know pretty quickly if you want to partner with me on the quest for your next great job.
I do understand that "admitting" you may need some advice can be challenging, especially for those of you who have enjoyed great success in your careers. With that said, one of my senior executive career coaching clients had this to say:
"...I originally thought that "coaches" were for someone else (not me) and that I did not need a coach. After speaking with Mark, I began to recognize that his service was invaluable. He calmly and smartly walked me through my initial efforts, showing me truly unique ways to use LinkedIn that I had not seen anyone else use. Although I was hesitant to take things up a notch on LinkedIn (it really wasn't my thing), Mark provided insight into how to leverage my connections into meetings, then interviews. Throughout my entire search process, he was always available to provide sound advice, strategy, and friendly positive affirmation that eliminated a lot of potential anxiety. I recently accepted an offer that had originated from Mark's strategies."
Don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly with any questions, and by all means, please read through and watch all the content I have out there, whether via www.winagainacademy.com or www.markmoyer.com, my YouTube channel, social media etc, all of it dedicated to leapfrogging you ahead of your competition and into the lead position for the job you truly want.
* There are hundreds of superbly qualified career coaches / counselors / strategists out there mixed in with the boring, outdated and old school people who claim to have advice to give. I did not want to include here any listings, directories and other sources simply to avoid the wrath of those I did not include. You'll know when you've found the right coach, trust your instincts, as long as you keep in mind what I have mentioned earlier here.
If you find that this post delivered some great ideas, please share it with 3 of your connections, fellow group members, and on other social media. This is exactly how I pick up great tips and ideas from some of the other thought leaders here on LinkedIn, and I'd greatly appreciate any efforts you make to do the same. And naturally, please leave comments below, I really do want to hear your thoughts on this topic!
