Wind generation in Ireland July was 33% lower than the exceptionally high output in July 2023. It was still the third highest wind generation for a July month.
Figure 1: Daily and weekly % of electricity demand met from wind generation
In July 2024, wind supplied on average 21.6% of electricity demand compared with 33.7% in July 2023. On average between 2018 and 2023 wind supplied 22% of demand in the month of June.
Figure 2: Wind generation & Demand for an July Month since 2015
Year-to-date in 2024 at the end of July, wind has, on average, supplied 32% of electricity demand in Ireland and just 0.2% more electricity so far compared with last year.
569 GWh of electricity was generated from wind in July 2024 in Ireland. This was 33% lower than July 2023 in terms of GWh generated and 10.5% lower than June 2024.
Figure 3: Monthly wind generation estimates 2024 in GWh
On a weekly basis in July, wind met 28% of demand for first week, 20% in week 2, 23% in week 3, 21% in week 4 and 9% in the last three days of the month.
Figure 4: Daily wind and demand in July 2024
On a daily basis, there was one day in July when wind supplied 53% of demand and one other day when it supplied more than 40%.
There were 7 days in July when wind supplied less than 10%, the lowest was 2% on the 14th.
Note that these figures are based on the SCADA data published on EirGrid’s website. These haven’t yet been quality controlled and, in general, the actual share of demand met by wind is 1% to 2% points lower when all the quality controlled metered data is available.
