Wind Generation in Ireland June 2024

Wind generation in Ireland June was 21% higher than June 2023 and was the third highest wind generation in a June month and the fourth highest in terms of percentage of demand.

In June 2024, wind supplied on average 25.6% of electricity demand compared with 21.3% in June 2023. On average between 2018 and 2023 wind supplied 25% of demand in the month of June.

Year-to-date in 2024 at the end of June, wind has, on average, supplied 34% of electricity demand in Ireland. Wind has generated 5.5% more electricity so far compared with last year.

636 GWh of electricity was generated from wind in June 2024 in Ireland. This was 21% higher than June 2023 in terms of GWh generated and 16.3% higher than May 2024.

During the second quarter of 2024, wind met, on average, 26.7% of electricity demand compared with 40.5% during the first quarter.

On a weekly basis in June, wind met 28% of demand for the first 2 days and 31% during the first full week, 26% in week 2, 20% in week 3, and 30% in week 4.

On a daily basis, there was one day in June when wind supplied 68% of demand and one other day when it supplied more than 50%. There were two other days when it was over 40%.

There were just 3 days in June when wind supplied less than 10%, the lowest was 7% on the 23rd.

Note that these figures are based on the SCADA data published on EirGrid’s website.  These haven’t yet been quality controlled and, in general, the actual share of demand met by wind is 1% to 2% points lower when all the quality controlled metered data is available.
