Wind Generation in Ireland September2024

Wind generation in Ireland in September 2024 was the second highest ever for a September month, behind 2023 terms of GWh generated. Share of demand in September was fifth highest for a September.

776 GWh of electricity was generated from wind in September 2024 in Ireland. This was 7.3% lower than September 2023 in terms of GWh generated and 13.6% lower than August 2024.

In September 2024, wind supplied on average 29.2% of electricity demand compared with 32.6% in September 2023. On average between 2018 and 2023 wind supplied 29% of demand in the month of September.

Year-to-date in 2024 at the end of September, wind has, on average, supplied 32.2% of electricity demand in Ireland and 0.3% less electricity so far compared with last year.

During the 3rd quarter of 2024, wind supplied on average 28.3% of demand compared with 33.4% in the 3rd quarter of 2023.

On a weekly basis in September, wind met 30% of demand for the first week, 38% in week 2, 13% in week 3,and 36% in week 4.

On a daily basis, there was one day in September when wind supplied 76% of demand (29th) and one other day when it supplied 62%. There were three other days when it supplied over 50%.

There were two days in September when wind supplied less than 10%, the 7th and 16th, when it supplied 9% on both days.

Note that these figures are based on the SCADA data published on EirGrid’s website.  These haven’t yet been quality controlled and, in general, the actual share of demand met by wind is 1% to 2% points lower when all the quality controlled metered data is available.
