The world is moving toward electric mobility, which involves the decarbonization of the entire transportation system through the mass adoption of electric vehicles. As demand for EVs rises, we must face the consequences that this increasing number of vehicles will have on the electric infrastructure — that is, the power grid. A large number of EVs will indeed increase the power demand required for charging, with a potential risk of overstressing the grid past its capacity.

In a world where charging electric cars is a key point in boosting the energy transition, other solutions can come alongside electric charging stations. One such solution is wireless charging. Wireless car charging is an enhanced version of smartphone charging with several differences. “Wireless inductive charging allows an electric vehicle [EV] to automatically charge without the need of cables,” said Michael Rai Anderson, CEO of Plugless Power, in an interview with Power Electronics News.

“Technically, everything is scalable; however, as power transfer rates go up, the complexity and size of the power management electronics must go up,” he added. “More importantly, as the power goes up, a number of additional factors needs to be considered, such as thermal losses and thermal management. The higher the inefficiency, and the higher the power, the higher the heat losses and more that must be done to manage that heat.”

Research and development in this generation is constantly evolving. The demand for power electronics, in particular, is changing dramatically. The rapidity with which technologies have impacted consumers’ habits and customs is unrivaled in the past, as they were technologically far behind. Consumers’ energy and charging habits have significantly changed in the last two or three years, and wireless technologies have fully integrated into their daily lives. Powercast helps customers solve many remote wireless charging challenges, powering wireless sensor networks, waterproof designs, reusable smart bands, RFID tags, and many other commercial and industrial devices while launching solutions designed to power consumer electronic devices and patenting many new ideas and solutions.

The key to #wirelesscharging becoming widely adopted in EVs and AVs is the reduction in the size, weight and cost of the WPT coils. Current litz-wire based solutions are constrained in this area. That is why we Resonant Link have reimagined the coils and are building them of aluminum thin foil on common PCB board lines. In doing so we drive out the size, weight and cost while also improving performance — faster charging, wider misalignment tolerance and air gaps and greater overall efficiency.
