Wisdom Is Much More Than Just Being Smart!
I want to share with you an amazing book which I highly recommend: “WISER: The Scientific Roots of Wisdom, Compassion, and What Makes us Good” By Dilip Jeste, MD with Scott Lafee”.
Here are a few paragraphs from the book.
“…. (W)isdom is more about acquiring a deeper understanding about meaning in life, of being able to see how and where you fit into the grander scheme of things and how you can be a better person for yourself and others.” p. X
“We all know wise people. They’re smart. Intelligence is an integral part of wisdom. But they are also warmhearted and compassionate. They are sophisticated, not simply or only in terms of academics or business, but in the ways of the world and of people. They are open-minded. They listen and make others feel heard. They are reflective, unselfish, and problem focused. They are willing to act on their beliefs and convictions, to do what is right, first or alone.” p. X
“Wise people become trusted advisors because they possess characteristic sagacity, happiness, and a calm demeanor that we can rely on. They seem to instinctively know how to handle the personal problems that others find overwhelming. Wise people stand still and resolute amid chaos and uncertainty. They are different. And the rest of us would like to be more like them.” p. X
“I believe - and it is the basis of this book -that wisdom, like consciousness or stress or resilience is fundamentally grounded in biology…. Behavior and environment impact biology -and biology impacts behavior….It means that each of us can increase our biological based wisdom through various means, including behavioral, environmental, biological, and technological interventions. We can, in effect, become wise faster.” p. XIV
It turns out that Wisdom scientifically is much more than just being smart. The concept of wisdom goes back thousand of years to the great philosophers. And modern science now has shown that wisdom is about biology, behaviors and traits which are connected to different parts of our brain.
The building blocks of Wisdom include knowledge, cognition, and emotions: such as, compassion, empathy, and altruism.
“Wisdom is a product, not only of age and experience, buy also of distinct behaviors and traits, all associated with discrete but connected regions of the brain. Wisdom is the result of neurons firing in specific patterns in specific parts of one or more relevant neural circuits in the brain to produce behaviors that we deem to be ‘wise’. It is biology and behavior that make it possible to separate wisdom from platitudes.” p.5
That paragraph is compelling! Clearly, Wisdom is much more than being smart.
“Wisdom is a form of advanced cognitive and emotional development driven by experience. It can be measured, learned, and observed.” p.12
Being open-minded, caring, kind, and compassionate is Wisdom building.
Wise people are not arrogant know it all’s.
Wise people behave in ways that optimize Collective Flow with Others.
Wise people are open-minded people.
Wise people manage their emotions.
Wise people are not Big Ego people.
Wise people are explorers.
Wise people are Reflective Listeners.
Wise people are kind, caring, compassionate, altruistic people who exhibit humility, patience, helpfulness, and open mindfulness so that they can better relate and communicate with others in ways that optimize human performance.
All of that coincides with my recent work on human excellence: “The Journey to Best Self - Taking Ownership of You”: Your Ego, Your Mind, Your Body, Your Emotions, Your Behaviors, etc. with the goal being to achieve a “Quiet Ego”, a “Quiet Open-Mind”, a “Quiet Body”, “Emotional Positivity”, “Reflective Listening”, and “Otherness”- building positive emotional relationships with others.

Too many people and way too many leaders and managers believe they are better than other people – especially the people with whom they work.
What is unique about the “WISER” book is that it drills down deeply into how our brains work. It has five chapters that focus on the details of how to optimize your brain’s performance so that you optimize WISDOM.
Those five Chapters are:
“Cultivating Compassion”
“Emotional Regulation with Happiness”
“Balancing Decisiveness with Acceptance of Uncertainty”
“Self-Reflection, Curiosity, and Humor” and
“Spirituality”.
Here are a few key statements from those 5 Chapters. Believe me – there are many key statements in each Chapter. I have read each Chapter twice because it is so enlightening:
“No single component of wisdom or becoming wise is more essential than prosocial behavior, doing things that benefit others or the society as a whole (and thus, you too). These are driven by traits like empathy, compassion, and altruism.” p.80
“Emotions are fundamental physical states arising from the body’s responses to external stimuli. Feelings are mental responses to those emotions.” p.108
“Emotional homeostasis is one of wisdom’s primary components.” p.112
“Numerous investigations have also shown that optimism and resilience are associated, not just with a happier life, but also a healthier life.” p.116
“Critical or wise thinking is associated with wellness and longevity. Critical thinking is a collection of cognitive skills used to think rationally in a goal-oriented fashion”. P.160
“Self-reflection leads to a greater understanding of one’s own emotions, cognitions, and behaviors, what philosopher Daniel Dennett describes as the ability to experience ourselves and be the ‘author of our own lives". p.170
“We must find ways to infuse the education of our young with lessons that promote the elements of wisdom: compassion and other prosocial behaviors, self-reflection, emotional regulation, openness to divergent perspectives, and the ability to make good decisions”. p. 279
I hope this Post helps you on your Journey to Best Self!
