Without audacity, there would be no Africanbank

As Africanbank, the bank for the people, by the people, serving the people, we are stepping into a new era of growth and innovation. This year, we revamped our logo and refreshed our corporate identity to reflect our rich heritage, continued diversification, and our burgeoning ability to support our people in the moments that truly matter.

Sbusiso Kumalo, Africanbank’s Group Chief Marketing Officer, recently joined DJ Fresh on the WAW Podcast to shed some light on our brand refresh. He spoke on the importance of reclaiming our inspirational heritage, and our evolution into a fully-fledged retail bank.

The story of Africanbank is a story of audacity. The vision of a bank for the people, by the people, serving the people, was born in 1964, at a time when black South Africans were marginalized and denied access to essential financial services. Our founders, pioneers like Dr. Sam Motsuenyane, Dr Richard Maponya, and Epainette Mbeki, were visionaries! At the inaugural meeting of the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (NAFCOC), they resolved to find a solution to the lack of funding opportunities that were available to black business owners. That solution was Africanbank! At that very meeting, they dug into their pockets and raised R70 as the first downpayment for their project.

Who builds a bank with R70?

Their audacity continues to inspire us to this day. In 2021, we took a decision to weave our heritage into blueprint for strategic growth. We adopted the slogan ‘audacity to believe’ to inspire our customers to believe in themselves and chase after their dreams, knowing that we would support them every step of the way. Just like our founders, we are committed to giving our people the backing they need to be audacious.

Our financial products and services have been designed to support our customers in the moments that matter. Take our unique MyWORLD account, for instance. It’s the only bank account of its kind, made to share with family and friends. It’s perfect for group savings goals, budgeting, and giving the people you love the confidence to take care of their banking needs. What’s more, its big on value with low banking fees, competitive savings rates, and easy-to-earn Audacious Rewards.
