Gernot Döllner on 2024: milestones, challenges, and the future
As 2024 draws to a close, Audi can look back on a year that featured challenges but also great highlights. Audi CEO Gernot Döllner reflects on 2024, assesses developments in the Chinese market, and provides an outlook for the coming years.
Gernot Döllner, what Audi moments from 2024 do you look back on fondly?
Definitely the start of our largest-ever product initiative. The new Audi Q6 e-tron and Audi A6 e-tron model series have taken us to the next level of electric performance. They clearly show that we’re ready for the future. We also launched the next generation of models with efficient combustion engines this year. With our broad portfolio, we can react flexibly to changing demands worldwide and offer our customers the opportunity to choose which drivetrain fits best for them.
At the same time, Audi is facing significant challenges …
2024 has been a tough year. Audi, just like the industry as a whole, is going through a transition. We are currently implementing major changes in our organization, for example in how we create our cars. We must develop, build, and sell cars differently today than we did 20 years ago – that is the only way we can stay competitive.
That’s where the Audi Agenda comes in. It is our activation and transformation program and addresses the issues we need to prioritize. And we’ve already achieved a lot: we are rejuvenating our product portfolio, and we are streamlining our internal structures to become faster and more efficient.
The company is currently repositioning itself in China with the new AUDI brand – written in capital letters – and with a new factory for electric cars exclusively for the Chinese market. How did that happen?
Competition in the Chinese market is very strong. I notice it every time I’m in China. To strengthen our position, we are expanding our portfolio with market-specific electric models and focusing on digital features. We will also reduce our development time. Collaboration with our two local partners SAIC and FAW is key here.
With SAIC, we have just launched the new AUDI sister brand. Together, we are developing completely new models to reach new target groups by combining the traditional strengths of Audi with the highest pace of innovation. This partnership makes us the first global automaker to launch a new, dedicated premium brand for intelligent and connected electric vehicles in China.
In Changchun, the production of fully electric Audi models exclusively for the Chinese market started this month. The city in northern China is the home of our joint venture for electric vehicles with FAW.
How fast will things continue to move ahead in the coming years?
Fast – there is still a lot of work to do. We will continue the product initiative that we started this year. In total, from 2024 to the end of 2025, we will have launched around 20 new models, covering electric cars, plug-in hybrids, mild hybrids, and combustion-engine vehicles.
One of the highlights in 2025 will be the new Audi A7 series, the successor of the Audi A6. In the medium term, we will also launch an electric vehicle in the compact segment. It will be a great entry point to the Audi portfolio with impressive efficiency.
Beyond that, we will continue the fundamental transformation of Audi in the future. The team and I are working on this every day. And we’re fully energized to tackle the new year.
Geoffrey Bouquot named board member for Technical Development
More efficient, more competitive, and more resilient: with the reorganization of Vehicle Development to start in the new year, Audi is getting ready for the future. In line with the principles of the matrix organization, a structural change will take place as of January 1, 2025: Geoffrey Bouquot will take over leadership of Technical Development, succeeding Gernot Döllner, who previously oversaw this strategic division.
Until now, Bouquot headed the Innovation and Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) division, which will be merged with his new responsibilities. Bouquot has been a Member of the Board of Management at AUDI AG since June 2024 and also served as deputy to the board member for Technical Development at the board level.

Let there be light
Style, safety and individualization combined. The lighting technology in the new Audi A6 e-tron offers it all! With eight different digital light signatures, customers can adapt the look of their car according to their taste. The communication light proactively warns other road users of the location of accidents or breakdowns. What’s more, for the first time ever, Audi has illuminated the four rings at the rear. Now that’s a real highlight.

Green genes
Sustainability is one of the key challenges of our times – and it’s been part of the Audi DNA for many years. “In my opinion, Audi is following exactly the right path,” says former ski racer Felix Neureuther , who is also a passionate advocate of sustainability and climate-friendly mobility. In this interview, the Audi brand ambassador talks to Dr. Rüdiger Recknagel , Head of Environmental Protection at the Audi Group, about sustainability in pioneering vehicles from the past, the appeal of electric cars, and the future of sustainable production.
New factory in China: net carbon-neutral* from the start
Ready, set, go! The new Audi production site in the Chinese metropolis of Changchun has been started exclusively manufacturing all-electric models for a few days now. The ultramodern factory sets new standards in digitalization, efficiency, and sustainability, producing in a carbon-neutral way from the outset. Audi is guided by its global environmental program Mission:Zero in China too, focusing on decarbonization, responsible water use, resource efficiency, and biodiversity. For example, the plant operates solely on green electricity and utilizes a closed water cycle.

* Audi defines balance sheet CO₂ neutrality as a state in which, after exhausting other possible reduction measures with regard to CO₂ emissions caused by Audi products or activities, CO₂ emissions that are still present and/or currently unavoidable in the supply chain, production, and recycling of Audi vehicles are offset, at least in terms of quantity, by voluntary compensation projects carried out worldwide. CO₂ emissions occurring during the use phase of a vehicle, i.e., from when a vehicle is handed over to the customer, are not taken into account here.

2dDear Mr. Gernot Dollner, I hope your Christmas has not been as adversely impacted by AUDI as mine. I am writing to express my profound dissatisfaction with the aftersales service and maintenance of my Audi A6, which has been an issue since day one, six years ago. My car has been in the workshop since early November 2024, and today is December 26th. Initially, it was in for a vacuum hose leak and sensor replacement. Within two days of getting it back, the warning light returned, costing me nearly $1,000. It went back for another two weeks, during which the entire servo and master pump were replaced, adding over $2,000 to my expenses. Shockingly, it broke down within 24 hours of the latest repair due to a stripped earthing bolt, suspiciously coincidental to recent repairs. The only previous time the plugs were changed was at your dealership, raising serious questions about work quality. I feel utterly undervalued as a customer. Despite significant costs and numerous visits, the problems persist. Your advertised commitment to customer satisfaction and service excellence feels like lip service in light of my experience. I do not believe AUDI genuinely cares about its customers. M. Williams
