How do you make an electric scooter that’s fit for the racetrack?

In the latest episode of The Third Angle podcast, we delve into the world of e-scooter racing and take a glimpse into how YCOM's expertise in motorsport engineering led to the development of the groundbreaking S1X racing e-scooter. Our producer Mark Desani visited YCOM HQ near Parma for a tour of their HQ with founder and managing director, Nicola Scimeca.

On the Fast Track with YCOM

Nestled in Italy's renowned Motor Valley, YCOM is a pioneer in motorsport engineering, known for its significant contributions to racing triumphs like the 24-hour Le Mans race, Daytona, and Formula One. As Nicola showed us around their impressive headquarters, he explained how the company leveraged this expertise when designing their racing e-scooter: the S1X.

“We’re the founders of ESC, which is the electric scooter championship. [The S1X] it's quite advanced. You know, carbon chassis, carbon post, in-wheel motors…each model has 6 kilowatts. It’s only two wheels, so managing the traction was quite tricky. In three months, we basically developed from scratch.”

Racing into Sustainability

At YCOM, the focus is not just on speed. There is a deep commitment to sustainability, rooted in their use of advanced materials and innovative processes. From carbon chassis to the incorporation of natural fibers, YCOM is leading the charge in environmentally friendly technology. As Nicola explains:

"In terms of sustainability, we have done a lot of work on using sustainable materials.  We use instead of carbon fibers on some applications, also some natural fiber. We design and build with an eye toward future innovation. We are continuously evolving in terms of processes; in terms of the way we work as a company.”

Integrating Advanced Technology with PTC's Windchill

YCOM’s partnership with PTC underscores the pivotal role of technology in their success story. Mark Lobo from PTC highlights how PTC’s Windchill played a vital role in the development process of the S1X.

"In just six months, YCOM was able to go from idea, to prototype, to production of several dozen vehicles ready for real track testing. [Windchill] provided experience, know how, and the technologies that enabled not only faster and more effective achievement of the goals that they'd established with the customer, but also comprehensive and documented management of the design.”
