You got the job! Now what?
First, celebrate. Jump up and down. Scream. Pop the cork. Call your bestie. High five yourself in the mirror.
I believe in full on self congratulations. It's no joke getting a new role. But, the hard part is actually not over yet...Now, you need to step into the role authentically and honestly, but also with some authority and confidence.
Do a deep dive assessment of where your skill gaps are.
Then come up with a plan to bridge the gap.
Are you an insecure decision maker?
Do you avoid conflict?
Are you hesitant to admit when you are wrong?
Do you secretly feel like an imposter?
Are you more concerned with being everyone's friend than actually leading?
Are you a poor time manager?
Do you lack confidence?
Do you know how to set boundaries out of love, not anger?
Do you know how to run a meeting?
Do you know how to share the spotlight?
Do you know how to step into the spotlight?
Do you know how to advocate for yourself?
Do you people please?
Are you a perfectionist?
Are you a procrastinator?
Do you know how to conduct a 1:1 with each member of your team?
Do you know how to ask for feedback from your boss?
Do you know how to receive feedback?

Do you know how to interact with a volunteer board?
Do you know how to channel your style to reflect your new position?
None of the gaps are a problem, unless they go unaddressed.
Warning - resisting the skill upgrade you need will backfire.
You can do it through mentoring.
Reading books.
Going to conferences.
Or, getting the one on one attention of a coach.
And, of course I am biased, but I think getting the coaching is the most efficient approach.
Why?
Because together we identify where you want to grow.
And then we come up with a plan. The plan involves both mindset and strategy.
You learn.
You apply.
You win sometimes.
You fail sometimes.
You adapt.
And you apply again.
