If you had the chance to do it all again what would you do?
- What would you STOP doing?
- What would you START doing?
- What would you CONTINUE doing?
- What would you do MORE OF?
- What would you do LESS OF?
I often ask these questions of my clients during our coaching calls to help them think about how they do what they do and what they can 'choose' to do. In the asking the question you'll be amazed at the answers that come up.
Now, as I think about the concept of RE-IMAGINATION I'm asking people to consider that first question: "If you had the chance to do it all again what would you do?" If all the constraints were off what would you choose?
Yet, it takes time and space to enable that conversation.
I often get asked how do I ever make time to think about the future. The short answer is, like anything, I make it a priority. I diarise my time to think and 'ponder' way in advance. Nothing (generally) gets into that time.
The key is that I take time each week to develop myself and my business. I call it Black time – to differentiate it from Blue time (generating revenue short term) and Red time (admin and back office time) – it’s one of the three colours that every flip chart or white board comes with and it’s a term developed by Shirlaws to describe the time every business owner / leader should be taking to work ON the business or ON themselves. Black time is where the value comes from long term. (I digress, and so I'll talk more about this in another post)
So, coming back to my opening questions. When (and if) you make time to work ON yourself or your business what would be your answers to those 6 questions.
- Which one would you find hardest to answer?
- Which is easiest?
- What insight does that give you that you can work with?
- and finally, what are you going to do with that insight?
As always I’d been open to know your thoughts, provided you are open to a healthy challenge...
You know it's key to continually work on yourself and your business if you want to grow. If you're not growing you're standing still! That's what the best leaders do. Having a coach alongside you helps keep you focused on your growth and asking yourself questions can sometimes be challenging.
When you're ready to take your business forwards, or if you're feeling the pressure right now, then now is a good time to call your coach. If you haven't got one, or are noticing that yours isn't challenging you enough then get in touch (phil@igniumconsult.com) for a conversation.
