You Never Really Learn Something Until You Teach It

You Never Really Learn Something Until You Teach It

It’s been about a year since I created a Train the Trainer course based on my book Global Dexterity and I wanted to reflect on what I’ve learned from this experience – something I had never done before. Here are two of my biggest takeaways:

1.  I see concepts I created from an entirely new perspective. I created the concept and book Global Dexterity from my own life experience, from research I’ve done, and from many interviews of professionals learning (and sometimes struggling) to adapt their behavior. But when I teach others my model and they apply to their own work, I see what I have created in an entirely different light. I see how Global Dexterity can be applied to corporate contexts in Finland, to hospitals in San Diego, to global teams in Poland and Chile and the UK, and to so many other interesting contexts.  It’s not only intellectually engaging to see these multiple applications of my original ideas – it’s meaningful to see the impact and I’m grateful for the experience.

2.  I have enriched my life by meeting so many talented global professionals. I have loved meeting and getting to know so many people from so many different countries and cultures. So far, we've had participants from Chile, Canada, France, India, Finland, Spain, Lebanon, Poland, China, Italy, and the US - and I look forward to expanding to other cohorts from around the world. And the good news is that the course itself is just the beginning of a community of practice that we’re creating for alumni, with additional opportunities for engagement via Slack and virtual meet ups to deepen our knowledge and even collaborate.

If you are a globally oriented trainer, coach, teacher or consultant interested in joining our community and developing deep expertise in Global Dexterity – come join our free panel discussion March 30th where recent participants will share their experiences. We’d love to have you join.

Until next time,

Andy

And as Richard Bach wrote in "Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah:" "You teach best what you most need to learn."

So true! Maybe that's why I love relating info I've learned online or at conferences to those who weren't there. I love to teach, and it helps cement the information in my mind as well.

Hi Andy, used to teach apprentices and Technical Officers in Training. Now I learn every as if I had to teach it and get an 80% grade in an exam. Though, having to teach someone, you really learn your stuff
