As a nurse, you’re likely no stranger to dedication, hard work, and compassion. But have you ever felt stuck—like no matter how much effort you put in, something is holding you back? Maybe you’ve dreamed of getting promoted, changing specialties, starting your own business, or simply feeling more fulfilled in your current role.

The truth is, many nurses find themselves trapped in a cycle of self-sacrifice and people-pleasing that keeps them from reaching their full potential. This cycle is what I call the Good Girl Operating System (Good Girl OS)—a mindset that prioritizes pleasing others, following the rules, and staying quiet over advocating for your needs and dreams.

What Is the Good Girl Operating System?

The Good Girl OS is a set of beliefs and behaviors learned early in life. It tells us to:

  • Always say “yes,” even when we’re overwhelmed.
  • Avoid making waves or asking for what we truly need.
  • Define our worth by how well we take care of others.

While these traits may have helped you excel as a caregiver, they often come at a cost: burnout, resentment, and a sense that you’re living someone else’s life.

What Is Being Stuck Costing You?

Take a moment to think about this:

  • Do you believe you could achieve more in your career if fear or self-doubt weren’t holding you back?
