You overthink?
Well! would we ever want our heart to stop beating?
Of course not, as it will stop beating one day when we die.
Would we ever want our lungs to stop breathing?
Of course not, because our heart is made to beat and our lungs are made to breathe and give life to us
then why do we want our brain to stop thinking. Isn’t it a good question to ask to ourselves?
One thing that our brain is supposed to do is to think and we certainly don’t want it to stop thinking but we want to manage and shift the focus onto something different. We want to it to stop overthinking by shifting the focus from one thing to another meaningful thought.
While we know that thinking is important, but overthinking can cause serious damages to us.
So, lets understand these three ways to stop overthinking,
A) Develop Self-awareness- As a human being, we tend to think negative about ourselves and we hang out all on those negative thoughts all day long, those thoughts create certain kind of feelings which arouses anxiety and depression within us. As you know our feelings are responsible for the results that we have in our life. So, when you are into that kind of situation you need to ask yourself this question, “What am I thinking right now?”
You'll be surprised to know as you get the answer, you will notice that I am thinking about something which I am supposed to do tomorrow or the next month or the next year.
Then why the hell am I thinking about it right now. As Jay Shetty wrote in his book, “Think Like monk”- He says,” You need to become an objective observer”.
So, stop overthinking about those imagined situations and as you go on a journey to develop yourself awareness, study how you feel, how you think in certain situations, monitor your thoughts
as you become more self-aware. You will stop overthinking as you will know how to manage your emotions. You will also understand how to manage your thoughts in certain situations.
B) Avoid the perfection Syndrome- In most of the cases it has been found that a lot of us overthink because they chase perfection in their craft which never comes. Trying to be perfect is a kind of a disease that will develop within yourself if you just keep thinking of the perfect state of any product or efforts and don’t take any action. Perfection syndrome causes almost a paralysis like a situation where you stop yourself from taking small actions because of the fear of failing or imperfect results. Remember, taking imperfect actions are better than waiting to be perfect. So instead of overthinking just do what you want to do.
C) Stop comparing yourself-
In this age of social media, majority of the people live on Instagram and Facebook but the irony is that they try to post all of the good things happening in their life, you will hardly find anybody posting about their failures, their challenges or struggles.
Watching others social media success, we develop feelings like
“Am I the only one who is feeling pain in life?”
“Am I the only one not getting success in life”
“Why am I not able to live a happy life like them?”
“Why do I not have the car that my friend has?”
“Why do I not have the bungalow that my neighbor has?”
And all sort of these feelings causes us to overthink.
It is natural to most of us that we develop a feeling of self-hate and self-Pity when we see the good part of someone’s life on social media and compare them with adversities and struggles in our real life. We hardly realize one of a very significant facts that no one’s life is perfect, everyone has shiny days and dark nights in their life.
In most of the cases, there is a huge difference in someone’s real life and life of social media.
Difference in real life Vs what is shown to us.
So, I advise you to stop comparing yourself. As Bill Gates also says,” You are insulting yourself if you are comparing yourself with others”.
Robin Sharma says,” Run your own race by being in your own lane”.
I have learnt that comparisons breed envy and envy breeds competition with others which is the lowest form of energy that you must avoid.
Therefore, stop comparing and stop overthinking.
You may ask,” Are we overthinking while we are planning?”
Let me share,
Overthinking and planning are two different things. Planning is deliberate and overthinking is natural.
Let’s not mistake planning with overthinking.
