Your Beliefs Impact Your Business Performance (Presenting Example)

I heard online a hypnotist say “First you form your beliefs, and then your beliefs form you”. This is so true and impacts on us every day. Quite often in ways we are totally oblivious to.

When you go to give a presentation to a room full of people do you get nervous? If you do, how in control of those nerves are you? Some nerves are good, its like an energy to keep you on your toes and respect your audience. But what about people that really can’t get up on a stage to present, or do so shaking so hard the audience want to pass them a blanket?

We have a strategy for completing anything. I don’t mean a five year plan that supports your mission. I mean our internal processes that lead to an output.

Let’s stick with the presenting example. What is it that you go through in order to feel nervous? What is the self-talk? What is the “limiting belief”.

From Robert Dilts book Beliefs - …”When working with any limiting belief, your goal is to get from your present state to your desired state. The first and most important step is to identify your desired state. You need to have a clear representation of your outcome…….Once you’ve helped someone set an outcome, you’ve already started the change process because their brain is a cybernetic mechanism. This means that they are clear about their goal their brain will organize their unconscious behaviour to achieve it. They’ll begin to automatically get self-corrective feedback to keep them on track toward their goal”

Dilts goes on to say “ You’ve got to want to change, know how to change, and give yourself the chance to change”.

So, working with an experienced coach allows you to identify what is you want, a clear positive goal.  Establish any limiting beliefs, including what may be a positive intention for those beliefs; and then set up an alternative belief that still meets the positive intention and allows you to pursue your goal.

I recently helped an author that could talk passionately about her (excellent) book on a 1 to 1 basis, or even in a cosy group, but if she had to stand up in a room, say on a book tour or anything similar she was petrified. After talking through her beliefs – it became obvious she had established a belief way back in school days when she was mocked when reading out loud in class.   Sitting deep in the unconscious and having served her well as a child, it was time to install a new belief as a very well-functioning adult.

That was one session a couple of months ago, having checked-in whilst writing this article she confirmed her speaking confidence has remained greatly improved.

Beliefs can impact on every aspect of our lives, if you are prepared to make a change, and want to explore where the beliefs come from, you can get out of your own way and establish positive beliefs that set you on the path to success.

Great thought piece Ian, I always say Beliefs drive Behaviour and so when looking to transform we need to align our beliefs to that goal
