I really like the concept behind the 80,000 hours website. The number relates to the approximate length of a person’s career. The website tries to answer the question “how can I change the world through my work?”. Aimed at post-graduate students it identifies the most pressing world issues and suggests aligned career paths.

Meanwhile, Palo Alto Networks threat research team, Unit 42, first introduced Adversary Playbooks to help describe the Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) used by prominent hacking groups. The Adversary Playbooks aligned the TTPs to the types of attacks defined in the MITRE ATT&CK framework and were easily consumed by definition using the STIX language.

After lengthy consideration Unit 42 decided to focus on the threats rather than the adversary group. Threat intelligence is now grouped by ATOMs. Actionable Threat Objects and Mitigations deliver smaller groupings of actions related to a particular threat even if the overall adversary is unknown.

In order to make the research as usable as possible each ATOM contains Courses Of Action (COA) that give direct guidance for how to mitigate the various threats. This blog post describes the changes in more detail or you can go directly to the ATOM viewer.
