Could Tampa International Airport host a food festival?

The restaurant growth at Tampa International Airport has prompted one local leader to suggest that TIA host an event that would introduce the non-traveling public to the eateries and retail shops at the terminal and airline gates.

Calling it "A Taste of TIA," Hillsborough County Aviation Authority board member Victor Crist said the event could be an evening where attendees could sample the cuisine offered by various restaurants and allow for shopping as well. It could be conducted “in the spirit of trying to attract more business here” and promote the airport as a brand, Crist said at the monthly meeting of the authority, which oversees the airport.

Attendees would have to register in advance, be screened by security and sign liability waivers, Crist said.

"It could be a way to build a loyal constituency," he said. He also suggested that the event could culminate in a "suitcase party" where "one lucky couple gets to fly someplace special right then and there." The proceeds could go to a local charity, Crist said.

"I think it's a good idea," Joe Lopano, the airport's CEO said at the meeting. "My mind is way open. Sounds like fun, actually."

TIA has opened 90 percent of the 69 restaurants and shops that are part of its new concessions program under the $2.6 billion master plan expansion.
