Your Purpose, Now
In last week's Sharpen the Blades, I offered up on leading and following. I now offer up a hand-in-hand thought this week on following your purpose.
Consider Purposefulness.
This past week, I shared on Truth and Understanding. I now want to share what I have come to understand as truth around purpose. This is Day 102 of of ROCK 105… and over these final few days of the 105 day journey, we explore...
Yes, consider Purposefulness. Consider it as a sense of meaning.
Consider how it is about living in the now... LIVING in the now. It is wholehearted in doing so. It is wise in doing so. It is wonder-full in doing so.
It has it's own sense of Zeal... that beautiful blend of Purposefulness and Enthusiasm... in doing so. It is not big and pretentious. It is real and relentless; if we but let it.
Purposefulness is not grandiose nor distant. It is now. Real world. Real time. Discerning our true calling is not some distant echo. It is freakin' now... in a still, small voice screaming in a whisper. It sees a clear vision, for now. It has goals but executes in the now, concentrating fully on what we are doing, now. We bring Excellence to what we do, now... finding opportunity in all that we face.
As I write this, knowing that we are at the "end" of this leg of ROCK 105, I am realizing some things ever more resonantly and powerfully.
- This is my life work.
- Exploring character and unity is my Soulful work.
- I will forever be a student of same.
- ROCK 105 is now ROCK 109, with 4 more virtues to be introduced; Audacity, Curiousity, Quietude and Xenophylia.
- My purpose is living my now, my own best now... living it physically, emotionally, mentally and Soulfully... one moment at a time.
- My 60 years of life experience tell me that my path was unexpected, ever step of the way, and the times I heeded Wisdom I made brilliant decisions for me... the times I did not, I did not.
- This confirms and reaffirms that Wisdom is found in the moment, and is where we find our Purposefulness.
Richard Bolles spoke of this in What Color is Your Parachute? One step at a time. No mountaintops from which to see all. No sense of long term path. Just a sense of the next step. Rumi said, "Sell cleverness, buy bewilderment". We need stop thinking we have it all figured out. We need stop thinking in terms of ascension and woke. We need stop thinking that we have found our path and purpose. It is not an event. We only know now. Life is a lifelong walk towards waking. There is no destination, but the journey. The path is the next step. Your element is found in your next step. It is found in the moving forward.
SO
Practice Honesty and Courage, with yourself.
- What matters most to you now?
- Who matters most to you now?
- What work matters most to you now?
- What service and joy matters most to you now?
- What causes matter most to you now?
- What purpose matters most to you right now?
The key here is NOW.
One brick at a time. What is your best, most right purpose now? What is the right thing, now? If we take care of the most right thing each time, we follow what is to be our unexpected but best path.
Be your best at what matters most. Integrity demands it...
... peace, passion and prosperity.

Lead, inspire, educate, and unite. Move forward together, stronger. My work is about bringing campuses, companies and communities together, moving forward stronger. I work with educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders to do just that. My work is about character leadership and education and its role in helping individuals and organizations build a better world at school, work, business and community. I deliver on it through speaking, coaching and development in character leadership and education. My expertise is character leadership and education. I advance unity in diversity by moving the needle on leadership and education that is high character and results forging. I speak, teach, coach, facilitate, lead, write, sing, dance, cartoon and create on that. In 1980, Professor Rolf Hattenauer changed my life. A highly respected expert in Human Resource Management, he expected much of us and he believed much in us. He was an educator and leader of high character. He was extraordinary. To this day and beyond, I try my darnedest to honor his spirit with my own work. That is another story. But I hope I did him service here.
