Your Weekly Dose of Demolition - 22/08/24

I have had a few very interesting chats with IDE President Vernon Watson this week, culminating in this morning where Vernon wanted Demolition Hub to make an announcement on their behalf.

Therefore, we can exclusively announce to the global demolition industry that international membership is to be made available with the IDE.

Vernon Watson, President of the Institute, is pleased and proud to announce that the route to International Membership of the Institute for those outside the United Kingdom has been finalised.

The process will be ratified at the next Council of Management meeting and formally announced at the Autumn Seminar at One Great George Street, London on 20 September.

Vernon commented: “This is an opportunity for the Institute to enlarge our membership and influence and for Demolition Engineers worldwide to demonstrate their prowess in the complex skills required of the Demolition Engineer, regardless of where works are; international members will have the designation IAMIDE/IMIDE to identify their membership.”

More information as it comes later this month.

We received a request from a doctoral researcher at Sheffield Hallam University , whose current work focuses on advancing sustainable practices in the demolition industry, particularly in deconstruction and material recovery.

Earlier this year, Chukwumaobi Ibe collaborated with Collins Demolition on the MidCity House project in Sheffield.

Using a combination of Faro 3D scanners and drones, they gathered extensive point cloud data, which is now being used to create a detailed 3D model in Revit.

This model will serve as the foundation for developing a Dynamo tool to simulate optimal deconstruction strategies, with the goal of maximising material salvage and streamlining project timelines.

To ensure the framework addresses real-world challenges faced during demolition and deconstruction, they are seeking input from industry experts.

By participating in their survey, your team will contribute to research that could lead to more sustainable practices in the industry.

Additionally, the research output (a framework tool) will be shared with you, which we believe will be valuable for your demolition projects.

Please take a few moments to complete the survey here: [Survey Link]

There are some fantastic projects happening across the country, and I apologise for having to decline a few recent site visit invitations. With the British Demolition Awards coming up on September 6th, it’s been all hands on deck to ensure that this year’s event is the best yet.

We’re thrilled to have our largest crowd ever, with more contractors attending than in any of the previous five years.

I keep saying we’re fully booked, but the Royal Leonardo Hotel continues to free up more space.

I’ll be finalising our numbers with the hotel by the end of the day tomorrow—currently, we’re at 372 attendees. If you’d like to join a united British demolition industry, network, and give the recognition this industry deserves, please let me know as soon as possible.

Visit www.britishdemolitionawards.com for more information.

Both your copies of DEMOLITION HUB Magazine and the latest issue of Asbestos Hub Magazine Magazine, which were coincidentally published around the same time, should arrive at your office or home shortly after the upcoming bank holiday.

Unfortunately, our previous printers went out of business, so we’ve transitioned our printing needs to a new provider, causing a slight delay.

When your copies arrive, please feel free to share them on social media!

To close this week’s newsletter, I wanted to share what a fantastic time I had with one of my international industry friends, Kevin Wiley, President of the Demolition Group of America.

Kevin visited London, and we spent some time enjoying a few Old Fashioned's while he shared fascinating insights about the American demolition industry.

I’m already looking forward to the next round in Chicago. Thanks for your time, Kevin!

Consider this an open invitation to any of you who’d like to meet up for a chat.

I wish you a safe and prosperous end to your week and enjoy the bank holiday.

My very best,
